: Real or Fake fur
: Pentara February 19, 2012, 05:38:15 -07:00
What on your thoughts having ears or a tail made out of real fur over fake fur? I know that this can be a touchy topic, so please keep this civil and polite.

I have the chance to purchase old fur jackets, and re-purpose them into ears and tails. Would you be interested in having a set of real fur ears and tail, or would you prefer fake. If you had the chance for real fur items, does the fact that they were re-purposed have any weight on whether you would purchase them or not?

I prefer fake, but i dont mind if people make real fur accessories, as long as they werent going out and killing the animal just to do it.

Well most furs do tend to frown upon seeing their favorite/ akin species turned into accessories. I mean by no means are they PETArds or anything, its just one of those things. Even if you are re-using it , its still a pretty touchy thing in a fandom like this and tends to be something best just avoided.

Now if you wanna get on a more technical note. Fake fur is far more durable and cheaper to get. Real fur is really only good so long as you are not rough on it or having to clean it often. Real fur can get worn out easily and start falling apart if its not properly cared for.

Hmm, this is a slippery topic. For me, and undoubtedly for many others in the fandom, it's also a deeply personal one (http://writeontheriver.org/2010-writers-competition-nonfiction-winner).

So no, I would never wear real fur, regardless of how it was obtained. Faux fur lets me express myself as a furry without harming (directly or indirectly) the animals I admire. So, we both win.

Given the species I've grown such an affinity for and the effects of the fur trade on it's survival as a species I'm pretty strongly in the Fake fur camp. My exceptions would primarily revolve around those who have acquired the fur through legal, well managed hunting for food. I don't believe that this excuses a buyer of fur products though even if the source is the same as this will inevitably lead towards the commoditization of the real fur product and inevitably towards animals being killed and abused to get there in the first place.

All that said my focus in these things is more intense around Traditional Chinese Medicine as it's currently the main driver of the trade in endangered species at the moment.

Alright, I understand about not wanting to wear the fur of the animal that you are. Especially when you don't know whether the animal was legally and humanely obtained. I suppose growing up in a family that had traditions in hunting for food, not to mention that I raised animals for food as well, such as pigs, sheep, rabbits and poultry, my position on this topic is different.

Now, considering my fursona is a panther, that doesn't mean that I would want any accessories made from panther fur. However, I wouldn't mind if the accessories were made from rabbit fur. That being said, I have noticed that people don't seem to mind having accessories made from leather, or from feathers. Both of which is collected from animals, after they have been killed for food.

So not I guess the question is, if you knew that the fur was from a meat animal, like a rabbit, how would you feel about that?

Thats a fair point, really most furs sticking point is if the animal was killed solely for its fur. I guess leather and feathers get a free ride a lot cause in our society we gobble down cows and chickens like they are going outta style. But this also could be cause people don't consider cows and chickens to be "cute" I think if people knew the fur was from an animal that was used for food they would think a lot more higher of it cause then its a "well at least its not being put to waste" scenario. At least thats my personal opinion.

Personally, I absolutely adore leather, and I love the texture of real fur.

I have absolutely no problem with reclaimed fur, or fur from an animal that was killed as a viable food source.
