GET ONE FROM VAL.
reptile rescue in Richmond.  Iguanas are like, the number one dumped reptile (because they are nasty and a ton of work).  Please please help her out.

oh, and you're much better getting a full grown one, where you can know what the personality is.  Iggs aren't pack animals like dogs or cats, there is no socialization going in their tiny brains.  You can't tame them, you're either lucky and you get a mellow one, or not, and you can't really tell until they grow up and get hormonal.

If you do decide on getting one, please be careful and try not to brag about it to many people. Be careful who you let in to see your iguana. Owning one was made illegal in bc a couple years ago.   :(

Yeah, when I was a teenager, we had two iguanas. Boris was an butthole and if there was anyone stupid enough to pick him up, they'd get whipped with his tail. Igor though, was a sweetheart. He'd chillax on your shoulder for hours.

Ren: Really?

i highly doubt that, there's no reason, and it sounds like a rumor

http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/wildlifeactreview/cas/species.html (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/wildlifeactreview/cas/species.html)

Iguanas are no longer on the list but they are still considered CAS, doesn't matter if they were popular pets at one time or another. You would want to look up the municipal bylaws concerning exotics, what's a legal pet in Richmond is a dangerous alien species in other cities.
I don't know where you live, you'll have to check that out for yourself.

SPCA has been pushing for years in to have them banned and most politicians in the sector are on their side.

If you are not an animal welfare shelter or zoological institution - if you just want an iguana as a pet - you are going to have difficulty doing so legally. If it's one thing these people hate doing it's giving out permits to exotic pet owners.

The cheapest and easiest way is to obtain one is under the radar. There's no need to deal with permits and licences.

I'm just saying be careful. If you do get caught your pet will be taken away, euthanized, and you will be fined.

I am not spreading rumours or trying to stir the pot here. I would much rather believe anyone with the proper knowledge and experience can have a pet iguana.
Such is not the case.  :(

Or save yourself the potential hassle, contact the government about Iguanas to confirm if they are CAS and what you need to own them. It may mean a few more headaches to get the license, but at least you won't have any issues later.

there are no restrictions at all, they aren't endangered or protected animals, they only reason the SPCA is trying to have them restricted is the same reason i cant stand when a mother says "i wanna get my 8 yearold kid a bearded dragon" because they think it's easy to care for and it turns out they arent

and municipal bylaws are fairly powerless in this type of matter when the municipality is part of a metropolis, if burnaby had the restriction and the rest of the GMVA didnt they would have no way to enforce it, the same way most of the bulldog bylaws are just as flaccid and impotent

I think you should speak with someone from the environmental ministry, then come back to us with that. I won't say you're lying to us, perhaps mistaken. I am extremely skeptical that there are no restrictions when the majority of leaders in the industry are pushing to have the things outlawed.

i can go to ANY pet shop right now and buy one, they aren't on any restricted lists in Canada, especially not in B.C. it isn't on the Prohibited nor the Restricted list, the only reptiles that are restricted are constrictors like Boas and Pythons

there's one in richmond i stopped at while picking something up in the area, and they have an iguana, and emperor scorpion, which is venomous, and would be a more likely pet to have restrictions but doesnt

What's the name of this place?  ???

Emperor scorpions are tiny, their venom is not deadly, and compared to lizards they don't carry any harmful illnesses that can be passed on to people.

I have seen multiple pet shops in my town that sell iguanas, they are by no means illegal. While I don't doubt some hair brained twit wants them banned because of some misconception about reptiles, its clear that they are not illegal. The restrictions I did hear about years back were about the more rare exotics, IE no big cats, no monitor lizards etc etc. I personally would love to have a Komodo Dragon guarding my place.. >: D

I would rather see over populated species get restrictions, how many cats do we need that just get dumped to the streets? Make those species require a special permit so the rest of us wont have to deal with them crawling in our garbage and shitting in our yards because soccer mums buy them like they buy Mc Donalds burgers..
