A volley and exchange of emails between me and a well-known fursuit maker.
I am a bit worried handing out 900$ to someone who I haven't met. I could easily do the 100% deposit, but I would be much more comfortable doing a 30% deposit.
My question is directed towards those furs out there who have ordered fursuits from fursuit makers. How was the process? Did it take a long time to get the final product to your door? Did you enjoy the quality/outcome of your suit?
I have to send a swatch of fur that I have to match my current body suit for the head. There seems to be a lot of unanswered questions, however; when it comes to ordering a suit.
Pay this, pay that. Make it this way, have it like that. Mail swatch, pay some more, paypal....It is all too confusing for me.
Last thing I want to do is spend all that money and get a head that doesn't interest me. I sent multiple quote requests to multiple well known fursuit makers. Only got one reply back.
Tell me your stories, fursuiters. :birdy:
I don't have a personal suit, myself, but hearing from all the others who have purchased suits from well-known suit-makers, yes, it can take a while. You have to remember that the person has other commissions going on, so it also depends on how their waiting list is. If it's nothing to worry about, then you might get it in less than a year. But if you have to wait to be in a waiting list to wait for the main waiting list, well then you're looking to about a year to possibly 2 years, lol. Most likely you are going to enjoy your suit when you get it, only so often but rarely does something happen where there's a little part of the suit they don't like, overall they still like the suit. If you like the suits they made for other people, then you know yourself that you're going to like the outcome of your suit when you get it. :D Do you mind me asking who this well-known fursuit maker is? o=
Edit: Also, it's never safe to give the full 100%, usually suit-makers ask for a certain percentage to pay for supplies and whatnot, so I'm guessing the person asked you for 900$? (or 30%) Also, how much is the suit itself, full priced, if you know o=
Im new here, been trying to figure out how to post. Saw this topic, I couldn't afford 900.00 for a suit so I made my own two suits, be glad to show em off if anyone is interested.
Twiskers
hello. my experience with a fursuit maker was relatively pain free. he only asked for the standard 30% deposit, to pay for materials. some fursuit makers have a long waiting list that is sometimes hard to get on. you have to keep watching their website or forum posts for when they are open for commissions. keep in mind the style of suit that particular maker specializes in . don't order a tooney suit from a realistic suit maker etc. don't expect it to be done immediately, some makers do this on the side and have jobs too. provide them with a duct tape dummy to get the proper measurements of your body: http://latinvixen.phpwebhosting.com/dtd.htm, (http://latinvixen.phpwebhosting.com/dtd.htm,) to ensure a perfect fit (Unless it'd just a head) . ask if they will give you pictures of the work in progress, in order to make changes if needed. I got my suit in 2 months and i love it ^^, hope this helps
well its kinda always best to get a suit (or body part) from a known suit-maker that way you dont need to worry about the person running off with your money. But many makers have a waiting queue that can be many months to a year before they even get to your suit. Always a good idea to put only the downpayment and pay the remaining amount once the suit is completed. As a sidenote Im not saying to forget about other suit-makers out there, many of them can & have made impressive suits.
Also many makers dont check their emails often so you have to be patient & wait for a reply, I had to wait 2-3 weeks for an reply.
Do research into what sort of suit you want from a suit-maker (cartoony or realistic) and what species they are best at, some makers are terrible at certain species.
For my suit Im rather happy how he turned out (http://d.facdn.net/art/wolfurryon/1314715213.half.wolfurryon_2.jpg) . You got to remember that when commissioning suits they have artistic legibility, meaning they take what images you supply them (from photos to reference pictures) recreating with materials so wont be 100% want you wanted. But damn close.

I made a body suit myself (you can check it out in my profile pictures here on BCF). I just need a head made as I want the head to turn out professionally. I can make paws/feetpaws/tails with ease. Head, well, that is a bit more trickier right. The total price for the head will be 875$, I have that much money already, but you guys are right when it comes to just giving the 30% downpayment. I have to send a swatch after I pay too.
I just find that, when talking to the suit makers, a lot of them are rude in their emails? It just seems that way, even though I have a few questions I would like to get answered before I do anything.

If you are worried about the fursuit maker you could either tell us who you are talking with or check their record with making suits. And possibly a couple of their past clients if you know who to look for. And if they are well known I would say don't be surprised if you end up waiting a year or two to get it.
I've talked to b3mascots and madefuryou. Good suit makers nonetheless.
I don't understand why suit makers keep open for commissions and quotes, when really, they don't have the time to fit the large amount of suit requests into their schedule.
I used examples from the suit makers portfolio to also show what I am interested in when it comes into making a head. (certain attributes, qualities, preferences). They seem to be fine with it.
Tell me what you all think.
Well i wouldn't call it rude. Making and selling fursuits is how they make money, This is just a business for them. With having to deal with customers on a daily basis(and some ppl are just whiny and demanding), i wouldn't expect them to be overly friendly X3

True enough. Whiney customers aren't the best. Either way, I don't see why that should make the other customers who have questions/concerns be treated any differently too.
I decided to go with another fursuit maker, Don't Hug Cacti. Anyone have any experiences with that suit maker? The head will cost about 200$ more but I am willing to spend that much for better service and quality.
Make sure you ask for lots of work in progress pictures. Maybe ask them to work on it on livestream, so you can give instant feedback. Just don't be too bothersome, or they'll get annoyed.
Also, fursuits do take a while to make sometimes. I've got a friend whos been on the waiting list for 6 months. Really well known, good quality fursuit maker.

Thanks for the reply. I just made paypal transaction for a fursuit head. It will take a few days to process, but once it does I will be pretty darn happy.
I hope everything goes okay. I can only wait now and see how it goes. I asked the maker if she does WIP pics, I am anticipating a reply back.
I made a full payment too. I would put the 30% downpayment on there, but I would prefer to get the head made sooner and I have the cash now. I am also told that I could have it done before a certain con is held that I am attending (only an anime convention), but sooner the better will work for me.
I am actually just ordering my first fursuit ever at the moment.
I contacted a popular fursuit maker, and saw they had many previous suits completed, and happy customers who showcased themselves with suits so I felt comfortable with handing them money.
I ordered a partial, but also immediately gave them money. They have no stated completion date but she was taking slots to have finished before FC, and I think she mentioned she 'wanted' to have those who purchased first done before the end of the year(I was the first to pay, and I assume first to get material ordered though I never asked to have it done before FC).
I don't have a lot of previous experience, I only have this as my model to take from, but with how soon I had just ordered mine, it's probably in a similar boat as you. It's a lot of money for a suit. They also require a lot of man hours to make. I know some people get filled up for a whole year usually, and quite a few fursuit makers will have to close commissions for suits to finish what they have.
Lady I ordered mine from said in her contact she has a full year to be able to finish the suit in case any emergencies show up. So far she has been a absolute pleasure to work with. She's been friendly, and communicative in e-mails with me. I've tried my best to give her all information she needed (measurements/concept art).
I can't say I'm happy with the product yet as I havent gotten it, but I'm pretty sure I will absolutely love it.

Lucky you. You got good service XD. In my personal experience (so far), good service is almost non existent for me right now. I guess the fursuit makers are busy and don't put much effort into responding to emails. I have to a wait a few days until my money gets processed into paypal, but once it does I will be happy.
Whos Lady btw? Does that maker have a website to look at. Good luck on the suit process too. I hope you get yours soon enough.
I got Furgen Studios making mine : https://www.furaffinity.net/user/furgenstudios (https://www.furaffinity.net/user/furgenstudios)
Hope that helps explain it. Kind of how I contacted her was on there.
