: Dealing with horrible bosses
: Roffo October 08, 2011, 12:14:40 -06:00
The title speaks itself,

I work nightshifts with another fur as a grocery associate at Superstore. Its a part time job - I don't need to to live but the pocket change is nice. The job is demanding and high paced. The people there; assholes. Not for the fact that the managers put others to work, but for the fact that there is an unwanted amount of degradation that happens in the workplace. Instead of positive reinforcement, there is negative reinforcement. Expectations are high for a job that is easily completed. I can't even count how many times I have been yelled at by my managers for doing something 'they' did wrong.
Not to mention that there is an abuse of authority. I've seen the 'highpayers' walk around the store, doing nothing, talking with other managers about stupid things unrelated to the job. I mean, they get payed 26$/hr, get mad at the employees who are doing work, and slack around for their whole shift.
Example, I am working 14 pallets of stock with another person; we finish 4 Aisles of work in 5 hours. Thats not that bad, really. Thats a good day of work for me. On the other hand ,the manager is still working in Aisle 1 taking his time. Huh, and I get into trouble for doing work.

I need advice. How do I deal with a bad boss? How do you deal with a bad boss? I'm ready to stand up for myself and lay down my rights as an employee. I didn't realize that being made to feel like shit was part of the job description.

Thats my rant, I hope this thread could help some other people vent.

This might help you. Skim over the applicable sections, and make a formal complaint to your union or the Labour Relations Board. Complaint forms from the LRB can be found here: http://www.lrb.bc.ca/forms/ (http://www.lrb.bc.ca/forms/)

I hope that helps.  :)

Go above their heads and complain to their bosses. This runs the risk of their bosses not caring, and you getting fired for being a rat, but this job doesn't seem worth the hassle. Let them get in trouble for being shits, instead of letting them take it out on you.

I've had a few bad bosses in my time, usually in small operations where there really wasn't anyone to go to above them. Often the best thing to do when you're in a situation like that is stick with it as long as you can, and while you're doing that look for other work. When you find something else, bail as quickly as you can from the job you're in. I know that's not easy to do, but the main thing to consider is that you *are* working right now, you're making money - that's something not everyone can say.
Having said that, if they're being blatantly discriminatory or unusually rough with you, then yeah you'd best go to the district manager or area manager or whoever is in charge of those managers. A nasty work environment like that is no good for anyone.

There's a saying that's taught in managerial classes that goes, "People don't quit jobs; they quit managers."

It sounds like you should try applying to other places of work, but continue gritting your teeth with the Superstore until you find something. (If you have a job and can't find any others, it's a good idea to keep the one you have until you've solidly landed a better one.)

I have been in jobs like that a few times, but I'm well past those days now. I'm going to go ahead and make some assumptions to start out, then I'll offer my advice. Please forgive me if I'm wrong:

First of all, I'm going to assume you are in highschool or just out. (<21 give or take). I'm willing to bet these '$26/hr managers' worked their way up slowly form the inside, maybe scored sub-par on a couple of easy classes, or got in because they know someone's dad. I'm also willing to bet these guys are all 26 or younger. If they are 30+ then you should probably pity them them. You have your career ahead of you. You don't plan on sticking around at Superstore for 10 years, but they have already put in their time. For them its hard to leave a liveable paycheck and power over a couple of teenagers. These are the guys that fall into jobs and wake up at their 30 years of service meeting, the whole time getting annual raises that barely beats inflation.

Fuck em.

Now for the advice... Keep that smile and kill them with kindness. Don't say a bad word to them, and do your job like the champion. Your revenge comes later when you advance your education or get a better opportunity. Don't settle for Superstore. That douchy manager WANTS you to ride his coat tails. I could give you tips to help you advance your career, but you and I both know Superstore isn't your career; it's just a paycheck. In the meantime you need to be the nice guy; The dude that is still smiling in a room full of pessimists. And finally, a couple of years from now when these losers are barley a memory, try and remember to not turn into one of those assholes.

Saying all this, if there is some gross negligence or other grievances that you can get other co-workers on board with, call the Ministry of Labour. If its a safety issue, call the WCB immediately.

I would try contacting the union board, but first at least try and see if you can find another job rather easily cause no one knows which way the wind will blow. But yes, I know superstore is unionized, even better would be if you could get evidence of the managers abuse, weather this is the word of other associates (given if they are not cowards) or even as far as using that nifty lill voice recording feature most phones got

But other people in this topic all make great and valid points as well. I have had my share of bad bosses, and some of them after A while I would just quit giving no notice and leave them to do their share of the work, or like in the case of my one tech job just try and expose all their dirty business practices like reading AND actually keeping certain customer's data and generally being big time pirates as it were.

Nice guessing! Yes, I just graduated. Yes, they are all over the age of 30 (or at least the majority of them). I put my 2 weeks notice in actually.
I got my first part time job at the age of 13 when I use to live in Ontario working for Tim Hortons. I did that for 3 years until I moved here to B.C. I can tell you, Superstore - terrible job to work at.
Thanks for the advice. I really want to look for some work in the future. I don't need to pay rent but I saved enough money to get my fursuit plus other things I would enjoy getting (new battery for electric scooter, etc). You're right about being nice to the employers even if they are assholes. I mean, I want to use them for a reference. As for an education, I start school in 2012 as I will be aiming for my Masters in Psychology. I believe getting a quick, early taste of life is good for youth as it shows them why it is so important to do well in school and get good grades and excel as an invidividual.

I believe in the meantime I will get into online selling. I have a knack for sewing I can probably sell some tails/ears online for cheap.

Superstore managers (Store managers)..  Not department managers, make considerably more then 26/h.

The top manager makes $400,000 a year   FYI.    So if they are 26 and know someones daddy and can get in as a manager of a superstore they make a very livable wage.  Hardly think that is something to just pass off as a poor career choice.
