: Furry Minecraft server - Donation to play
: Selkit April 16, 2011, 11:59:57 -06:00
Gentlemen, ladies and others. As an experiment, myself and a friend have opened a dedicated Minecraft server; 24/7 operation, CraftBukkit, utility plug-ins and more. If you are interested in playing, we do request a mandatory donation, to offset the cost of bandwidth (Running the server costs approximately $80/mo). However, as a hosted server, the quality of service is excellent, and the server is whitelist only, with grief protection. If anyone would be interested in taking a peek sometime, please post here, and let me know. Renwaldo, I'm looking at you; You already expressed interest in joining. Requested minimum monthly donation is $8; Donation amounts will be lowered as we get more players in (Though past a point we will need to upgrade the server's memory, which will increase costs, alas).

What type of memory do you need for it, and how much? I may actually have some spare RAM.

I don't play minecraft, but I am looking to reduce the pile of spare parts in my home before my wife beats me with a motherboard.

It's VPS hosted for the time being; If we get more than about 10-15 players concurrently, we'll need to go to dedicated hosting, or take a spare Core2 machine I have around here and rent rack space for it, Zen. Unfortunately, physical parts aren't of much use presently.

must hide this from jester, or i'll never see the internet again... ._.

seriously though, how could one get donations in? I'm sure he'll be interested, so I may as well inquire for him, :b

It'd be via PayPal to the server's webmaster (One of my co-workers). I'd need to ask him what the address is, alas.

Hrm, I am very much so interested in this. . .  :o  there is a catch however. I don't make enough to justify applying for a pay-pal or credit account. I don't suppose there is another method of payment? I know you are local, but I don't know your co-worker.  :(

PayPal is effectively free, Ren. You just need a valid debit account, and can use it to send an e-Check rather than hooking a credit card to it. Unfortunately, I have no easy way of getting physical donations to him (He's a contractor, residing in Virginia. Needless to say, he telecommutes). Still. You should find some way to join us; We've been working on a structure so large for the past few days, that it's already at the maximum building height, and about 40 blocks across in all directions. It's planned to hit 140 blocks across, all the way to the sky. :D

How exciting!  :o  I'm jealous I'm missing out!

I'll look in to a pay-pal account then, I tried applying for one years ago and they wouldn't let me because of my lack of a sizeable checking account.

I will look into whether or not CertaPay is a valid option, Ren. It's a means to send an Interac payment via E-mail. I'm not sure it works when sending to a destination outside of Canada, unfortunately. And as of the time of this writing, the monstrousity is now 60 blocks across. We have a crew of four fuzzies currently hammering away at it.  :-3

I'm reading over the pay-pal privacy policy and whatnot, I think they're my best bet right now. I need to talk to my bank and get their branch number and my account information before I can apply. All I have is my checking account, no savings and no credit.

Expect me to join you guys within the oncoming week.  :monocle:

Just waiting on pay pal now to confirm my bank account so I can start shopping online. I'll send my payment in to you guys in a couple days. I already have minecraft on my computer, is there anything else I need to download to use your server?

Nope. Vanilla Minecraft 1.4.01 Beta with some minor mods (Chest protection, godmode for Ops, Bukkit core, and MMO Mod, though we'll be adding more once we switch to a new provider). We're switching to a higher capacity VPS already. The current one's straining a touch, and we've found a better hosting deal. Same price, for almost twice what we're getting now. Two full CPU cores, 2 gigs of memory and full virtualization control on our end. I'll need to ask Geenz where his PayPal is set up; In the meantime, Ren, PM me your Minecraft name, and I can pass you server details back. I'll have you white-listed tomorrow, or as soon as you pass me your Minecraft name to add to the list.

This looks like fuuuun. I've never seen the online side to Minecraft before.

$80 a month? Jeeze, that's an expensive host. @.@ Hope you have a lot of slots on it. The host my school friends and I are using is $7.60 or so for 12 "reccomended slots" but we've managed to have 15 on with no lag at all. We use www.brohoster.com (http://www.brohoster.com) if you're curious. ^^;

Looks like fun, but I'm too poor to be able to join ya guys. xP

I tried to get on last night but it said I didn't have permission or authorization or something?  :-\
Where do I make the payment out to through paypal?

Taw;

We actually switched to a higher capacity VPS recently, one that only costs us $56 to run. The main issue with BroHoster is we basically get no back-end access whatsoever, which is required for certain plug-ins (Big Brother, a block protection plug-in, requires full SQL access, for example). We're running our own server instance, our own OS install, and our own packages, with 100% control at any time 24-7. We likely won't have to switch hosts anytime soon, as the current host has plenty of capacity (4 gb memory, 2 dedicated cores).

Renwaldo;

Weird, I could have sworn you are on the whitelist, but I will need to check and verify. I know Geenz was tinkering with the VPS earlier today, I believe to install a new RC of Bukkit. You should shoot me some messenger details in PMs.

(Edit: You are indeed whitelisted, Renwaldo, as Renwaldo. Not sure why you would be unable to log in.)

Hrm, I'll try again.  :-\

edit: Well, I've been trying to get in and the message I'm getting is, "Failed to logon: User not premium"

I know it's not a server or connection issue because this message is appearing seconds after I try entering the game. If it were an issue with the server connection it would pause at the "loading..." screen for a couple minutes before simply saying "Failed to logon: connection lost."
