Hey everyone
Unfortunately in the past 3 almost 4 months I have been here my job hunt hasn't been all too fruitful, bar the 3 interviews I've had that didn't work out. Financially my back is to the wall and I have until the end of May at the most if I'm frugal before I'm flat broke.
Should I reach that point, I will have to leave the country and return to Ireland and although it's the only choice I'd have at that point I don't want to consider it, as in the short space of time I've been here with the general environment and how welcoming everyone has been, this place feels more like home to me now than my birth country ever did.
I know I can work at places such as workforce and labour ready. I'm all for hard work, but the pay just isn't going to cover the important things and some days there's no work at all so it's not a great long-term solution.
Much as I have rambled I should really get down to the point of this thread, which is do you guys have any employment sites/agencies/companies. that you've had good prospects with and are welcoming of applicants like myself who are not yet permanent citizens. Anything you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I did all my work hunts through the Canadian Gov't website - they have a Job bank there. And no you don't need to be a citizen.
Also Craigslist can be fruitful at times...
good luck
Do you have training in any field or trade?
The summertime is approaching; if I were you I'd be applying at golf-courses as turf-maintenance, or camp-grounds and parks, etc. Some of the work you do at those places can pay decently enough and you get to work outside.
If you can spare the time and money for study, I highly suggest picking up a course at BCIT that you can work on at home. Power Engineering is a good place to start. Power engineers get paid ridiculous amounts of money and they are in short-supply in this province. I'm currently working on my 4th class. If you like boilers, industrial machinery and all that jazz, definitely check it out. You'll be able to get a job almost anywhere that uses a boiler for heating (hospitals, hotels, factories, etc).
Best of luck to you in your search. I'd hate to see you have to leave because you couldn't find work out here, especially since you like it here so much.
If you can get in with one of the temp agencies, try and work on that - it might not be huge money, but at least it's work and you can hopefully parlay that into something longer, either through them or through the companies you wind up working for. A friend of mine in the States is doing that right now, and it looks like it could pay off.
Barring that, as suggested if you have specific skills, get out there and market them to the companies that might use them. Print up resumes and cover letters and drop them off on spec - even if they don't have an opening someone is likely to look at your resume when you drop it off and something might work out. Lots of places don't advertise their stuff widely, and sometimes it's the legwork that pays off.
What industry or business or trade are you aiming to get in to?
There are a bunch of websites and headhunting agencies that all cater to specific types of roles, so knowing your intended role will help with suggestions.
Some general ones I know are (some of these may have been mentioned before):
Job Bank
Monster.ca
Workopolis
Craiglist
Classifieds

My experience lies in business administration, the problem I'm finding though is because I have no local experience and with my current citizen status. Companies thumb their noses at me, which has seen me resort to exploring the avenue of general labour. I actually would love to do a course, but I'm caught in the problem of being unable to afford it right now and I'm bound by the restrictions of my visa, that I cannot enter into full-time education. If I could I would likely pursue nursing and maybe progress to medicine.
I have a list of places to look that have been suggessted and I'm thankful for the support. Just have to stay positive and as you say with summer approaching something is bound to come up that I can do.
try this, you could earn 200-400$ in a day or three, might help a bit.

Thank you Sevrin. Unfortunately I am unable to apply as I am not yet a Canadian citizen.
