Most people hate talking about their labour life, so I doubt this thread will last. I thought it would make an interesting topic. :-\
I met someone just recently who has been a building manager, film camera grip, hair dresser, casting agent, foster parent, and african finch breeder. My point is not everybody has boring work lives. :P
So let us hear about yours! :)
I just got a call for a job interview at a grocery store bakery down the street. Wish me luck! :-*
Maybe I won't have to be unemployed anymore!

I am the only white, non-Asian language speaking staff member of the H-Mart in Langley. I work at the cash, and often end up being asked by management to fix their typos/grammar errors in their signage. And yes, there are many. But most are banners we are given by head office so I can't be taking white-out to them...
for the record I am perfectly fluent in English and French.
My aspirations are to become a pastry chef.

You can't miss me, I stick out like a sore thumb.
And I work most nights, your chances are good that you'll spot me.
I'm a System Administrator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_administrator) for a small business. One of two 'IT guys', basically. Maintain servers, people's computers, phones, that sort of thing. Been doing that or tech support since I graduated high school. :p

oh no, i mean like raping little kids who are like 8 or under, :/ and these guys generally say their mid forties. I got to be honest Rat, your job sounds really boring. :-\
Hey, don't knock it - MSE is actually pretty damned good, from what I hear - so much so that rather than getting people to install AVG or Avast or any one of those other free AV suites (or especially pay for the bloatware that is Norton/McAfee/Trend/etc.) a lot of my Windows-admin'ing friends actually recommend just using MSE instead.
Of course, I'm a UNIX guy so it's kind of moot, but at least MS is trying to do something about it. :p
I think I may understand on some level what it is you are saying...

Nice. MSE is my Anti-virus of choice, along with safe browsing habits.
I work for a health authority. I work on and support software applications that clinicians and the general public use.
Sounds boring but it's cool seeing stuff I do actually impact people's lives in the "real world".
For instance, the latest thing I've been working on is an application that will let you book appointments and view results for STD/STI testing online. The only thing you will have to do in person is go to the clinic at the specified date. Should be out sometime in 2012.
I work in business administration, but I've dabbled in biomedical practice and nursing and would really like to get back into it.
My job sucks. I get to be a s**t rag for motorists (unless it's a MVA). Yup... This wuff is a flagger. :( Am seriously considering upgrading my DL to a Class 3 though.
My job sucks. :c They only give me 8 hours a week. Not enough to survive.
Like it's fun, but not enough hours and they keep giving more hours to the new hires.

MSE is the best free antivirus out there, as far as I've seen. I have to admit I usually pay for ESET/NOD32 because I'm leery and my laptop does a lot of travelling into the great unknown of foreign networks, but really I'm not sure it does that much more for me. MSE, when I had it, worked well.
As you may have guessed, I work in a computer department, for a locally based drug store chain.

I just got back from my first interview at Thrifty's, I think I nailed it. The bakery manager said she was impressed. :) I'd love to work at Thrifty's, it's a wonderful company, their customer service and quality of stock is the best in the area. The only downside is the shift starts at 5am and it's part time.
I have another one in 40 minutes for a customer service position at Safeway. This one doesn't thrill me as much, but the hours would be better than Thrifty's. There are union fees and they put you on a 'starter' wage for the first week or so.
Any work is good work though. : /

So true.
Anyway, that's great that you nailed that bakery job. Baking has always had a special place in my heart. :3
Well I haven't got the position yet. I have a good feeling about it though, the lady seemed impressed. :monocle: The position doesn't involve any actual baking, I would be packaging freshly made pastries in the morning for display. All the same I'm looking forward to working there.
I just got back from Safeway. That one didn't go as well. >.< This other woman didn't have any personality. She was like a robot, she fired five questions at me and the interview was over in minutes. I didn't see her taking any notes, and she didn't tell me much about Safeway or the position. I got the impression they weren't desperate for employees. :-X
I guess we'll see though. I'd rather work at Thrifty Foods.

No i don't know how to get one, and everybody who wants to help me keeps putting it off and wont tell me how to do it myself or let me do it without them.
:(
im a home depot rental tech
meaning i rent tools to customers and contractors and when they come back i clean maintain and repair if necessary although i don't get paid as a tech because im not "surdifide" i still end up acting as one as im the only one that can.
its fun but sucks but mostly sucks.
Because most customers coming thinking just because they seen how to do it on tv that they can do it.
one customer came back after he bough a special order tool off me and doing some flooring he comes back saying this, and i quote "this nailer is a peace of crap" me "how come", "when ever im nailing in the dark it misses the tong and wont set in the groove" (pause did he just say he was setting his floor in the dark O.o) obviously i had some trouble from not lafing my ass off but i succeed and ask him why he had to do it in the dark and that nailing in the dark he said something like not having lights at the job sit and stated it wasn't recommended to nail in the dark and they make portable spot lights for that and directed him to electrical and he filed a complaint agents me. lamo
the other love is customers think that just because there older that i don't know what im talking about (im 20) and evan though i highly don't recommend something they go a head and do it any ways and wonder why it broke and they have to pay $500 or it just didn't work and they still have to pay for the the rental.
but on the positive side i don't get many customers and most are good and usually contractors and as a bonus i get to fix stuff customers brake lol

Start here: http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sc/sin/index.shtml (http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sc/sin/index.shtml)
All it takes, is taking your birth certificate with you to your nearest Service Canada office, and filling in an
application form. You don't need anybody else's help (unless you're younger than 12 years old, then you
need your parent or guardian's signature). You can also mail it in if you can't get to a Service Canada office.
I'm an electrician, doing everything from simple residential plug-ins to 500KV substations. This work has been taking me everywhere from as far north as the yukon, down to kamloops, and from terrace to regina and i'm never on the same site for more than a few months, so definitely get a few km's of traveling in a year. I think the most interesting place i've worked at so far has been the syncrude oil refinery in Ft. Mcmurray shortly after they killed the hundreds of birds due to their own lazy its-not-that-important-atm management style.

Oh well it's simple if you have your birth certificate. Just fill out the form and send off for it, you can even fill it out on the computer and print it out (just don't forget the part that needs your signature). You need one to be employed, well, to get paid.

Dude, seriously, take the mcdick's job. It'll give you a chance to exercise some self control, :p as well as it pays decent, they usually do benefits I think, and they'll help you with your post secondary education. Also, the leprechaun comment is purely due to his short, fat, greediness. I think he was part native or something? but definitely not Irish, :b

I cook at a fairly awesome restaurant in Gastown, full time. No lie, I enjoy going to work every day.
Is it just me or does there seem to be an abundance of furry cooks and chefs? Like, holy crap. Though I guess BC(vancouver) is supposed to be the best place for aspiring chefs, isn't it?
VIU is world renowned for being a great cooking school, in fact im planning to go there so i can work somewhere trendy like a japanese urban style place, or an off the hook bar / grill.
i dunno, it looks more like its "world renowned" in the sense that VCC is.
But to the same point I would probably say if thats renowned, the schools like The Culinary Institute of America, or Art institute Culinary campus Vancouver (formerly Dubrulle Culinary Institute), or even the culinary institute of vancouver island, would be considered "illustrious".
But i'm also of the opinion that people only go to VCC because its cheaper and has something to do with Gordon Ramsey. Not to say good chef's can't come out of schools like that; of course they can. I just think its rarer than the schools themselves lead people to believe. Between VCC and Dubrulle/Ai Culinary, I would think that Ai was the better school. Simply because the four chefs I know, two from each school, the two from Dubrulle/Ai are much better chefs, exponentially better in fact, than the two that went to VCC. ANd I say both Dubrulle and Ai because the one chef I know went to the school before it was bought out by the art institutes, but I believe its still essentially the same courses with some of the same instructors even.
I'm rambling. It's way too early. I'm going back to bed.
Well... It really all depends. VCC is great for not only getting students to take the PC1 and PC2 (professional cook levels 1 and 2) exams, it is tied to the government and your hours for each level get recorded. That is, when you take the Western Culinary arts. The bad thing about the W. Culinary is that you learn too many preferences of cooking methods and styles. All derive from the "On Cooking" textbook, but each teacher is different. There are 11 month blocks, where each block has a different teacher. Some are excellent, and some... Well, I will say meh.
However, the courses all do follow the Red Seal program, and your hours get submitted to the ITA - the Industrial Training Authority, to count towards getting your red seal. I am not sure if the other schools count toward such, since they are private as opposed to VCC, which is public.
There is only so much I can say, though, as I took Asian Culinary there, and it was very good. Actually had to memorize recipes and methods for exams.
I went there not because it was cheap, but because it was the only school I heard of out in Alberta - and my cousin from Kamloops taught at VCC before, and she knew some about the program.
Anyhow, that be my two cents! I still love cooking, and to get my Red Seal, I will be working in some restaurants.
Also: The Dirty Spoon, which is close to VCC downtown, has ties to Bobby Flay from Iron Chef America. I do not know if Gordon popped to VCC or not =P

Yeah, Ai works that way too, as far as I know. They even use On Cooking, lol. To be fair, I've only talked to two people about the differences; one was a student at VCC, and the other being Jester, who graduates from Ai this month. The only thing the VCC student was able to say about it was that she didn't get any homework, and something to do with Gordon Ramsey being affiliated with the school. Though looking him up on wikipedia, it doesn't mention any affiliation with the school whatsoever, so that could have been something she made up to try and be impressive.
I don't even know why i'm rambling about it to be honest, lol I don't cook. When I do go back to school, it'll be for equestrian sciences and farrier sciences, XD
It might be explained by the fact that 38% of people employed in Western Economies are in the service industry, a category in which cooks/chefs are included- the high male demographic makes it less likely that they are working front of house. You'll probably find higher numbers working retail too. Just based off of stats.

Gordon Ramsay is affiliated with Tante Marie in England.
I'm actually looking to go to school in a year or so, and what I can see is this. AI used to be Debrulle before they got bought. Afterwards a mass exodus of the chef instructors happened, mostly in protest to the lowered admission standards, and higher tuition. (It's almost checkbook and a pulse now). A lot went to VCC, and two jumped ship and opened their own school, Northwest Culinary. Both have remarkably similar curricula, and both are ITA certified.
On the other hand, you also have PICA, which is super French, and super plating heavy. It's almost entirely fine dining.

Zen: What do you program?
Emofox: I bet you have a sezzy voice. I hear you have to have a sezzy voice for that line of work. :P Do you get a lot of purvy old farts calling?
Lt Reistark: I'll have to get you to help me with my pagan spring equinox goat roasting.
Velvetkytten: I used to be really into that kind of stuff back in high school. We'll have to get together sometime so you can give me a reading, maybe ask about my financial future. :P
my readings are only 20bucks too :)
I worked in a Medical Marijuana dispensary...
I dabble in music recording and production for artists, street performance and metaphysical practice (some tarot, crystal massage, shamanic journeying).
I also teach ESL...
Between jobs at the moment though, so I'll probably end up doing restaurant work until other things work themselves out.... I've got a fair bit of experience.

I see, it's funny they don't have that for other drugs. My sleeping pills are mostly made of lactose sugar found in fresh milk, it would be convenient - and cheaper, no middle man - if I could just go to a local dairy farm and ask the farmer for some pure 'lactose monohydrate'. >_<

They have cows that produce 'lactose monohydrate'? That I would like to see!!! LOL

Really? Thats frustrating. Sodomy is still 'illegal' in lots of places, for example, and I wasn't incriminating anyone. I was explaining the issues surrounding the work that I was doing and the misconceptions about it- I don't see how that shows poor judgment. Other than were I explicitly state that my activities were in contravention of the criminal code of canada, but protected by the courts... what was the problem? Perhaps you could be a little more clear on why you deleted the entire post, rather than just part of it?

Because it was being blocked by my work filter. PM me if you would like to discuss further.
I'm really curious as to what your response was now. pm me or something?
Yes this is BC so most people relax at night with something they can smoke before bed, its BC furries so we can't say none of us do that.

Eh, this prairie boy don't pull weeds that often, nor do I need to touch them! Well, maybe compost, to help my cooking herbs grow...
Anyway! For work, I currently dishwash at Hamilton Street Grill, and I have an interview with the Glowbal group~

Yes, yes we can.
I got the job!
I'm doing my training today and tomorrow. After that I can begin my position as a cashier!
Initially it was only supposed to be part time, but given my availability I'm getting full hours for the next couple of weeks.
:D
The good thing is this means I'll have more money to do fun stuff with you guys, unfortunately I won't have as much free time to spend on furry activities.
