: Doing it all again.
: Roffo December 06, 2010, 07:30:27 -07:00
I am curious about what everyone has to say about this topic. If you could go back in time and redo something that you have regretted for the best, would you do it? What would you do now compared to what you previously did?

I'm sure many furs here have regrets about their past.

I can basically copy and paste what I wrote in my journal on FA a week ago:

There is not a single thing that I regret doing and would take back, even if I could. I am where I am because of the choices I've made and the sequences of events that led to me getting here. I am a happy person. Taking back even some of the worst things I've done would change the outcome of today. I'm not about to start denying the fact that I'm very happy with what has become of me.

If you regret something, it means you didn't learn anything from it.  That's my philosophy.

People learn the most from mistakes and pain. So even that I have experienced some very painful things I don't think I would change them. Like the previous poster said learning and growing from mistakes makes us who we are. You have to accept and admit your mistakes and grow

Dwelling on those mistakes and regretting them too much is stopping yourself from moving on

I've thought about what if something would have happened differently, but not as a regret only as a musing about how things could have been different. I definitely would not want to change anything though, because I'm happy that I've met who I've met. Love is a wonderful thing.

On the other hand, I have often fantasized about what it'd be like to re-experience my teenage years with all of my current knowledge. *giggles*

I regret all the drugs I did in highschool, all the class I skipped... Not because I skipped class or did the drugs, they were some of the happiest days of my life, I learned who I am and learned more about myself than I ever knew before, embraced my writing and made lasting friendships... but I regret it because I was stupid enough to think I knew it all, to think I was special, that I could get by without going to class, that I could live without highschool and be happy without a good job. I can be... but a few fewwer hours skipping class stoned, a few less nights spent drunk as can be rather than doing homework, a few more chapters read in textbooks and a more tests writen sober...

Shoulda partied after highschool.

While there have been things that have happened in my life that I regret, I wouldn't take them back as others have said. While I felt terrible in those times, I also learned from them so that I wouldn't make the same mistake twice and I could also advise others not to make the same mistakes I did having experienced them.
I used to focus a lot of the could of, would of and should of, but that's a quick way to drive yourself crazy. You should be looking to the future, not dwelling in the past.

To me, saying that you regret everything that turned you into a furry means you don't wan to be a furry.  So why are you (still) here then?  Don't use the past as an example where it is irrelevent.

Use glasses instead of a monocle.  Mine just keeps popping off in surprise when I read this forum  :monocle:

If I could do it all again well, I would have toned down the period of my life where I did anything to get ahead putting education, money and success above family and friends.  I did not need to have that attitude.

Sounds like me in reverse Lune. We both coulda used some middle ground, eh?

To all those saying they wouldn't change anything...

This is a very nice viewpoint to take... although, given the fact that nobody CAN go back and change anything... its rather a pointless reply in a thread asking what you would like to change... Yes, if you change anything, you wouldn't be the same person today, but I'd say anybody that feels their life is perfect and nothing in their past is worth changing is deluded, insane, or trying way too hard to sound smart or philosophical...

The question and point of the thread wasn't "Do you hate your life and want to change something?"... so don't look for the backdoor in the question, it doesn't contribute.

TL;DR = Get your head out of the past and work on your future.

Felix:

Some people, despite having something horrid happen wouldn't change it for the world. Perhaps I could take back my decision to turn away from my post secondary studies in order to follow food. Maybe I would still be in Alberta. I do not know. They might not be the kinds of people who need the change, as they want to see what they can make of the future ahead of them. I do not know... But, don't be an asshat about their decision on the topic.

I don't think Felix meant anything by what he wrote.
I believe he was just summing up and inputting for what he DID read on.

I'm sure I could find instances where, if I could isolate something from the timeline of my life, I would've done something differently. However, I don't think you can do that. Given that and the fact that I'm pretty happy with the state of my life, I'm going to say "nothing", with the qualifier that I could probably find little things here and there that I would've done a bit differently if I really wanted to nitpick.
