: N.Korea Vs S.Korea
: Riot Da Woof! November 23, 2010, 03:28:24 -07:00
yeah, Not furry, but relevant to my interest.

At the current time:

North Korea has Launched 200 Shells, with 50 striking border Island of south Korea.
with 2 dead and 10 Injured, South Korea has retaliated with 80 of there own artillery shells with an untold number hit as of yet.

Thoughts?

Are we heading towards another Major war? or will this just blow over ?

I'm hearing that the US issued a reply basically along the lines of "Yeah, keep it up.  We got somethin' cookin just for you, bitches."

I'm interested as to why some espionage shit hasn't been pulled before now.  Kim Jong Il has been stirring the pot for a couple years now, and the US has been watching him very closely.  I'm actually surprised that Kim Jong and his ilk haven't just suddenly vanished into thin air and everyone looks at the USA to see them clapping the dust off their hands, looking at everyone like "What?  I was just outside chopping wood, I swear..." O_o

Everyone is afraid of nukes and all that.  Canada and the US have sooo many anti-ICBM countermeasures that they might as well just be giant pool-noodles in the Pacific ocean.  Remember NORAD?  Something tells me they aren't gonna be tracking Santa this year...

The worst that this could possibly lead to is another Korean war.  The US is already overstretched military wise, and the unpopularity of the Afgan and Iraq invasions has certainly dropped them, and wars in general, down a few dozen more pegs.  Now, if NK decides to start invading, of course the US will lend a hand, but it will probably be another pointless and long entrenchment like the last one.  I doubt this would spread any further.  North Korea would have to get publicly announced backing from China, Russia, or some other Major country for things to get messed up.

Now if Iran's true leads, not Arminijad but the counsel or whatnot that runs in the background, decides it's time ... then they have the location and allies to really mess stuff up in the middle east.  That would have a completely different wave of effects, especially because they would pick on the US' baby: Israel.

Actually, the war never officially ended.  A ceasefire and armistice were agreed upon in 1953, but no formal Peace Treaty was ever signed.

Russia doesn't have much reason to support north Korea seeing as Putin is socialist, not communist.
although china might help.

oh, and kim jong il isnt the leader anymore, one of his sons is.
it was supposed to be his eldest, but he fled the country.

tells you alot about how bad a country is if the leader's son decided to flee from it.

Interesting, didn't know that ... although not surprising really.  I'm pretty sure NK has broken that a few times, though.  Troops in the demilitarized zone, sea attacks, etc.

I wouldn't see Russia doing that either, but my point was that if another economic super power put support behind NK, then the US would jump right in.

When did they change power in NK?  AFAIK Jong-Il was still in power, he had just named one of his sons as successor.  I totally missed that!

Actually, Kim Jong-Il is still in power; his son has been moved into a position in the government where he'll get some experience with various things and be eligible to move into his father's position when the time comes.

The analysis I've seen so far is that NK is pushing the envelope to try and tell the world 'We can do this and nyah to you because we've got big friends" - it's going to take China standing up and going "Hey, quit it" to really get them to back down. Or the US carpet-bombing the artillery emplacements along the DMZ that are threatening Seoul with B-2s and B-52s from high level so that the NKs haven't got that hanging over the South.

I personally dout it means anything...

NK might be a little strange... but they have made it clear by their huge standing army and atomic weapons program that they are not about to do a halfassed attempt at war.

If they planned to truly attack the south, they would have done so, not shelled them and drawn attention first.

I agree with the ideas about trying to show, after he just named his heir, the family's strength within the military, and to show that his son will stand up to the south and the US just as his father did.

The US won't get involved unless something more happens, and is large enough that they can't get away with shaking their fists at it. They are too spread as it is, and don't have the heart at home in most cases to want war.

News update: turns out they're after a uranium mine on an island near south korea to use to make atomic weapons.
