: Canada is America WHAT???
: Icey Dominus November 16, 2010, 10:31:59 -07:00
this is a very sensitive topic for me as i am VERY nationalistic for Canada. I have been told Americans considers us one in the same, we are not Canada just another extension of the States! I say not a fucking chance! Any one else agree that States has a little to much affect and control on are wonderful country? I have had long arguments with less nationalistic Canadians about what they would do and why other country's would do if the States invaded us. Personal I would fight that to the end but that's just me. I am not sure where i am going with the subject lol

All things considered, we are our own country as we have evolved to such by the establishment of our own confederation, and are no longer considered New England.

They started their country by declaring independance... something which Quebec has failed to do on many occasions.

I would just laugh at their hypocracy.  Besides, their whole country is based on hypocracy.  They claim freedom but gays have to fight for their rights, etc.

Believe it or not, as late as the 1920s, American and Canadian servicemen were tooling around each other's countries secretly strategizing contingency plans in case one nation decided to invade the other.  We should invade America first.  Let's capture Point Roberts, sue for peace, and then demand reparations.

Well, this reminded me of something I heard a while ago, but I don't know if it went anywhere or if it was just a rumour. But there was talk of having a North American currency, called the Amero (go figure...) that would be along the lines of the Euro. It would combine the Canadian dollar and the Mexican Peso with the American Greenback, so that there could be border-less transactions.

Kind of a dumb idea, especially the name. They should drop a "C" in front of it so it's "Camero". XD

Screw invading them, tax the electrical power, oil, and water we sell em, get a little revenge for the softwood lumber bullshit, make some money, and laugh at them...

Saying Canada is just more of the US is like saying Japan is just part of china, Ireland is english or that France is german... Its asinine and just goes to show the massive superiority complex that is the USA.

I find the American military lacking in soooo many ways i would rather kill myself that join them just to be killed by my own team. There training is nill if you live through it because the loose a few in training alone. they are acceptable losses considering they can just conscript more.

I would hate to say this but we cave waaayy too much to the US and its true that our cultures (or lack there of) are so similar that Im not terribly surprised that we could be mistaken for one in the same >.=.> and im throwing all the stereotypes out the window saying that. Im talking here and now what our cultures are like.

But personally I would find it pretty insulting to be called American as we are far more progressive with human rights (especially gay rights that should be universal by now) and we have quite a few things like health-care that we pretty much take for granted and the fact we are FAR LESS controlled by religion! Not that I despise America, I just don't like the attitude they seem to have.
: Re: Canada is America WHAT???
: StickyTheDragon November 19, 2010, 12:54:44 -07:00
Canada has it's good and bad points, as I'm sure does America. What disappoints me is how much we pretty much give them. We used to have the best air force in the world, but the US was all "We have all the resources! Give us your designs, and we can't start using these things against the axis in bulk!" and we were all "As long as it means freedom! :D". Canada's pretty much always been like that, though. It was the safe haven for black slaves (Well, safer, anyway), and the Vietnamese. We help people, regardless of their race, past, gender, ect. Saying more will sound bragy, so I'm gonna counter all this stuff with something not cool that we did. We DESTROYED the natives of this wonderful land! Well, I guess that was more the English... still, our ancestors and cousins did that! It's terrible :-[.

One thing that really bothers me: God is mentioned in our national anthem. I thought we we're supposed to be the guys who were FOR religious freedom :-\.

Canada's PM = Not the greatest, but he's handling himself even if i want to meet him only to punch him square in the nose.
America's leader = Obama had hype, but he hasnt done any more than bush to save america's trash economic state.

Canada's economy = bad, but recovering slowly.
America's economy = bad, no signs of improvement whatsoever.

Canada's ethics and acceptance = all religions accepted, little discrimination aside from ignorant people and our primeminister.
America's ethics and acceptance = if you're not muslim you're okay. gay people have less rights than heterosexuals. the fact that they throw them out of the military when they WILLINGLY signed up to risk their lives for their country makes me laugh.

Canada's state in the middle east = although i personally don't believe we're needed, its still efficient at keeping peace in afghanistan.
America's state in the middle east = they pulled out claiming 'mission accomplished' after a war lasting almost 2 decades, and produced no evidence for their reason of invading other than the need for oil, which in end fucked their economy with the amount of money they wasted on that fruitless war.

in short, i tend to see america as a country that's purely overconfident and super-nationalistic.

I believe that part is referring to Jesus. Unfortunately, I don't have an alternative anthem thought up, and even if I did, about 95% of Canadians would be against changing it.

Hey, maybe we could write a new national anthem for Canada? Just for fun? :)

I would love it if nationalism simply didn't exist and there was no need or desire to boast one's nationality.  I would love it if there were no borders and we were allowed to move and trade freely from one person to another without the useless bullshit of currency exchange and import-laws.  I would love it if religion could stay the fuck out of politics (and my life, altogether).  I would love it if I could have an endless supply of good beer and free internet.

Where am I going with this one?  I dunno.  Still not getting any free beer. =\

sounds to me like the way most countries in europe were before christianity made its way there.
aside from internet.

but it was alot simpler and there were no real borders then.

I think the funny (and I don't mean "ha ha" funny) thing about the whole Canada/US relationship is that Canadians are a lot more interested in - and exposed to - the US than Americans are in Canada. I think some of the root of the rampant anti-Americanism in Canada is just plain resentment of that fact. I'm not a fan of nationalism and it bothers me that that attitude is so readily pandered to in this country.

I actually really like the US, even if some of its culture (especially its political culture) baffles me, but I don't think I'd want to live there because the influence of the right wing and the deep-seated market-worshipping ultra-libertarian attitudes don't quite sit well with me, even if I have some sympathy for the libertarian urge. Certainly more than I do for the conservative ones, anyway.

I also think Canadians are distressingly ignorant of a lot of the dark episodes in their own country's past. Will Ferguson writes on that topic a lot and his books are well worth picking up.

Couldn't have put it better myself. I've never met anyone who wasn't a brain dead idiot that lived in the U.S. and liked it. In fact, anyone I know that lives there wants to move to Canada.

Really? I've met plenty. I think a country and a nationality aren't something you throw away offhandedly, and I have respect for the people who would rather try to fix their country than abandon it, even when it looks most hopeless.

It's very easy to fall into US-bashing. Harder, I think, to look past the media image and see the people behind it, and to keep in mind that the biggest idiots are also often the loudest.

I think there are a lot of important differences between Canada and the US - in some ways the UK felt less alien to me than the US - but I don't think we should be so quick to get smug about them.

Me too, it was nice. It isn't often that credit is given to our nation for providing for America.

Although to be fair, our country is more reliant on theirs than they are on us in terms of international trade. There's still a large majority of product that goes through (if not manufactured in) America before it can be purchased by Canadian citizens.  That's been gradually getting better over the years, but the majority of our commercial name brands are still American based.

The grammar is correct, I think; it's just a weird construction. It's basically "Canada, command true patriot love in all thy sons/all of us".

Colonial Canadian English is considered informal by real Englishman.
The Brits generally have a better understanding of the language than Canadians ever had.  :-\
: Re: Canada is America WHAT???
: StickyTheDragon November 28, 2010, 01:03:07 -07:00
Well, it is called the ENGLISH language. :monocle:

Have you ever really talked to some Englishmen? I have, because my cousins are English. They have all of these different words for things (e.g.: Flats in England, Apartment in North America). Technically, our language should be called "North American English", as we and the US basically share it. The only differences that come to mind is a few grammar differences, spelling differences and saying "Zed" instead of "Zee" (I say "Zee", even though I was born and raised here). Perhaps the usage of the word "Eh" also. ;)

Well, I think you have to allow a little poetic license given they're lyrics. It's "command in all of us", cut up a bit.

Re: North American English, I actually find Canadian English is sort of halfway between British and American, but I use more British slang than most people do due to my partner's influence.
: Re: Canada is America WHAT???
: Vanilla Skunk December 02, 2010, 05:23:01 -07:00
The majority of the English speaking people in the world have based their language, down to the spelling, on British English.  The states differs by removing U from a bunch of words.  Colour, for example.

We still keep the U in our spellings, though it is "optional" nowadays so long as you're in Canada.  It's just annoying that you have to select "British English" to get spell checkers to use the true Canadian spelling for most words, but then the grammar correct changes things that shouldn't be.  I think we should be a little more present with the way we speak and spell our language, not "Oh whatever."  This goes for software that provides spell checking abilities... stop lumping Canadian English with United States English, for fuck sake.
: Re: Canada is America WHAT???
: Silvermink December 12, 2010, 06:18:36 -07:00
Personally, I leave out the U's. Call me a heretic, but that's the way I've done it for a very long time.

As for the spell checkers, the US English default is the simple fact of our markets being largely integrated and the fact that the US has ten times as many people as we do. Does it suck? Sure, maybe. Is it likely to change? I doubt it.

I don't bother with the "U"s, either. It just annoys me when I type a word in with Canadian spelling and it calls the word incorrect, so I don't do it anymore.

No, it probably won't change. No point bitching about it, right? Especially when only Canadians would be reading it.

If I didn't have to worry about shoddy internet, I'd seriously consider moving to New Zealand or Australia.

If (God forbid) Sarah Palin gets in in 2012, I've not-entirely-seriously (but not-entirely-unseriously-either) considered moving to Europe just to be further away from the US. Though I would still enjoy it from afar. :P My partner's a dual citizen, Canadian/British, so that'd probably give us a leg up if we wanted to move there. Of course, Britain is a total Big-Brother surveillance society, but I think the new(ish) government there has made some important moves toward dismantling that.

New Zealand seems nice, but I'd give Australia a miss. Its government has a total hardon for obsessively controlling its citizens' access to the Internet, as you alluded to, I think.

Maybe my comment about getting further away from a (God forbid) Palin-led US seems incompatible with the love for it that I professed earlier, but think of it this way - I think tigers are beautiful, too, but it doesn't mean I want one roaming my backyard. Though, with Sarah Palin, maybe the better analogy would be a bison or something - beautiful, but not too bright.
