: Gliese 581G (goldylocks planet)
: Jimfoxyboy October 02, 2010, 10:11:58 -06:00
If you haven't heard already:

I just caught on the news that they have found the closest earth like planet. And it's only 20 light years away.

wat.

ohwait I've heard of that.
lets hope we don't pull an avatar if there are any native inhabitants already there.

It's cool, the temp ranges from +40- to -40 or something like that. Has more gravity then Earth. Would be neat to check it out.

Higher gravity means stronger inhabitants, perfect for heavy labour like mining and factory work.  We'd have to enslave the local population though because the cost of shipping Nikes and raw materials 20 light years back to earth cuts into profits and we can't pay them.

So we can't be friends? :c

I'm pretty sure The Doctor wouldn't be happy about us enslaving another race of beings, now would he?

I just heard of it today. Sounds awesome. :)

Isn't it Gliese 581 g, not c?

Remember, earth-like is used in a loose sense; it could mean like anything between Venus and Mars. Probably more like Mars.

Ah, so your right. My bad, fixed the subject.

It is just the implications of finding a planet that is close to earth size and gravity, rather than a super earth that has me a bit intrigued. And to have it 'relatively' close by rather than millions of light years away. They don't know if there is water on the surface yet, but it wouldn't be long before they can find that out with the next few generations of telescopes.

On October 9, 2008, the Ukraine's National Space Agency aimed the powerful RT-70 radar telescope at the Gliese system and transmitted A Message from Earth (AMFE)-501 text messages, photographs and drawings by everyone from average folk to Gillian Anderson.  With luck, it should enter the Gliese system in early 2029.  Unfortunately, the message was aimed towards Gliese c, which at the time it was believed to be the most likely habitable planet in the system.  Let us hope the signal has enough breadth to reach Gliese g as well, although at this point since SETI has not picked up anything from the Gliese system, the potential for a response seems unlikely (unless the Gliesians have adopted their own Prime Directive).

Woo something else to take over and ruin after we harvest all it's resources.

I love Earth.

We don't have magical fake beings to mentally embody. ^_^

Oh that part.

I'm sure half the planet would hide and the other half would protest/riot. :3
