My family does not know yet but I plean to let them figure it out on thair own because I'm no sur how they'd react to it because they always didn't like my wired frends and alwas crticied me about them I still plane to hide it as best I can and if they find out they find out I personally don't see as a big deal but if there's a possibility it my change the way my family thinks about me or reacts around me it turns in to a big deal because I like things the way they are.

Yes, parts of my family do know (my fathers don't, oddly), and my mom is fine with it, and I think it weirded out my sister, because she went with the whole infamous "Zomg, what about the sex aspect thing?" from CSI. I tried to explain, but I think she's sort of written it off as "Well, she's not some strange sexual deviant, so it's fine."
...And yes, I did plural "fathers," as I have my step father and my "real" father, both of whom have special places in my life. I don't think either of them would understand at all.

I am pretty sure my mom would be ok with me being bi, but my dad cried for 30 min after he told me my sister was gay... Not sure how'd he react to me being bi. It's the same reason why they dunno about me being a furry.

It amuses me when a parent would cry about their kid being gay. I mean, if the kid went "Mom... I'm straight." you know she wouldn't burst into tears of grief.
To answer the first question ... no they don't, and I have no intention of bringing it up just yet. Actually, I only recently told anyone about my interest in the fandom, but it was someone I already knew was a part of it.
One of my peeves is parents who can't love their children for whom they are, just because their orientation isn't "normal". I have three children, and if any of them came to me and say "hey dad, I'm gay / bi / trans / etc" then the only reason I'd be in tears is due to joy. I want my kids to be able to be open with me, and be true to themselves.
My friends and sister know, due to a drunken game of fetish chicken.
But it's my opinion that parents have a right *not* to know their children's oddities.

That makes sense. I would imagine most parents would hate to find out that their children aren't "normal". That's what seems to have happened with my parents. -.=.-
I haven't told the parents. We operate on a need to know basis, so as long as I'm safe, fed, and not homeless, the rest of the information about my life I volunteer as required, and they do the same. It's sort of an adult mutual respect thing. Honestly, I don't think they'd get it.
I also found it interesting that a lot of furs on here have mentioned their sexuality as well, which I suspect would present a good deal more challenges than just being a fur. My parents seem very open and accepting of homosexuality, but if I walked in tomorrow and announced I was getting a divorce and moving in with a male friend of mine, I'm not really sure what they'd do (HYPOTHETICAL! I'm not going to do this! I'm happy where I am!). However, I think a lot of people from our parents' generation have trouble seeing beyond the "gay or straight" dividing lines. I've been told by a good friend of mine that I'm the most effeminate straight man he knows, and I'm completely cool with that. Likewise, both me and Rune have an appreciation for the beauty of our own sex. Thus, when someone says "Oh, you're straight, whatever" it kind of hurts to be lumped in with the six-foot-two logger balding beer-drinking homophobic demographic. Sexuality is more "open" than it has ever been, and I think that's a great thing, thus these lines we draw in the sand are getting old and stale.
I don't really discuss that with the folks either. Again, need to know. My mother doesn't need to be worrying that I might find certain guys attractive, even though I have no intention of leaving or being unfaithful to my wife.
After watching a certain episode of Entourage, my brother finally pieced it all together, and I think it did weird him out a bit, but its not something I'll lose sleep over. :3

Out of my entire family, its my grandmother who is totally fine with it, and thinks its very interesting.
I think its a good thing to be open about, just because its not something that one should be ashamed about, however there can always be different circumstances that prevent being open about it.
I don't shove it in people's faces and if its something they want to know more about they can just ask, but I don't go out of my way to make it known. :3

Same here! I think that my mom would rather that I was gay than bi, and if my dad finds out about my bisexuality, I'm gone.
no almost no one irl knows i am a furrie cuz they would not accept it, is sad really is the same with being BI i would be disowned from my family for it
Nope. I generally keep my personal activities separate from the family stuff - I've lived away from them for the last 15 years or so, so they know I do my own thing and the two don't meet at all. I'ts safer that way. =P

I'm not saying that parents should just let their children do whatever they want but I think parents shouldn't be so harsh about things especially if they don't what their children is involved on.
What pisses me off is that parents are such dumbasses when it comes to understanding their children.

My mom/dad knows i do anthropomorphic art but i hardly consider myself a furry mainly more of a cartoonist . Plan on getting into art school doing animations and such and make my own cartoon series based off my comic strips. Which has a furry chubby fox and a emo retard.
Or my other cartoon idea with feral animals taking anthropomorphic forms basically shape shifting due to a potion making each character alittle unique.
Also they know i have a thing for foxes mainly cuase to me its my spiritual guide.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. If your an understanding, open and caring person, your child will see that and be more honest with you. So many of our parents are all set on their children turning out "right" instead of just supporting us in whatever decisions we make.
My Parents might know.........Tho I don't care. My mom is on my facebook and has prolly seen the pics of me in fursuit. I don't think either parent cares. I haven't told them and I don't feel the need that they need to know.

nope. No reason for them to know, and I am very happy with my "normal person" veneer. My close non-furry friends know, I usually only tell people who already know me well and wont make judgments on it.
As for sexuality, I know my dad doesn't care, but my mom has wondered if I was lesbian ever since high school. I enjoy screwing her prying questions, and I refuse to give here a straight (lol pun) answer.

That is why I never told my mother I am pansexual. She has always gone on and on about how homosexuality is a sin and a crime against God and nature. Now I don't even talk to my mother so it doesn't really matter what she thinks.

They've known since I was 15 or so (i.e., half my life ago) and never cared. Mind, furry was a lot more obscure then.

My family, coworkers, friends, and acquaintances know everything about furry. There are FAR more diabolical things in the world to confess to, and personally, I find it silly when people think it's some kind of a life-altering thing to admit to enjoying cartoons, artwork, and costumes. This is nowhere near as big as telling someone your sexual orientation. Remember, Furry is NOT a kink!
Heck, I wore my fursuit at Christmas dinner, out of request by someone in my indirect family. Yes, Christmas dinner. To this day, my entire family tells me how much they loved the experience.
I mean, really, it's all in how you define furry for people. Furry is as diverse as the people in it. It can be whatever you want it to be, so why not tell people what it is to you? The only reason others would be wierded out is because they are basing their opinion on what they saw on CSI or vanity fair. Tell them why it's not like that, and most of all, tell them how FUNNY you think that version of it is!
Why tell them at all? What happens if someone decides to troll you, or harass you. Worse yet, say through an unfortunate sequence of events, you wind up on encyclopediadramatica through an unfortunate choice of words or actions. These people WILL call your family, your friends, your landlord, your boss. Yes, it's happened to a few people I know before. Don't you think if people know this stuff already that the effect would be more like, "no, he doesn't do that.. he told me they look down on people who have sex with dogs."

It's not only more fun when you can share your interests with people (in moderation), but it's safer too.

At first my parents were disgusted and disappointed, my privileges to privacy were limited, I wasn't allowed on the computer without parental blocks and supervision. It sort of changed the way they thought of me ever since, unfortunately they viewed it as a sexual deviance. ??? I got the impression my mother assumed I was turning to pornography because I was socially incapable of having a 'real' relationship at the time. Over time it became less of a huge concern and more of a family joke. I went from being the embarrassing family mistake to being simply the invisible retarded son.
Gradually they've gotten over it since then. Now I'm allowed some level of privacy on my own computer anyways, I'm not sure if they remember or what their reaction would be if I ever brought it up again. :-\ I tried to explain it to them at the time that it was simply an innocent subculture based around the idea of animal personification, but for whatever reason they just thought I was some weird beastophile mental case.

This is very much like what happened to me. I was the same age, too.
my family would totally flip out, then after a while they would tell everyone they know and i would become the new joke for everyone for the next 10 years. I know this cuz they do it with anything that happens in my family, they latch onto everything and NEVER let it go. It would be terrible i would become very depressed and angry about it and then i wouldn't be able to be around my family.

hmmm well i understand very much that the furry is NOT all about sex but you must admit there is a small part that is, like if you didn't enjoy it then you wouldn't do it. Also look at the furry porn seriously a ton of that stuff, and who makes that porn. . . . furries! so i understand that we as furries try to make everyone understand its not all about sex but here is a portion that is isent there? i guess i am just being devil advocate sorry :(

the first time i ever herd of furries i am sad to say and dont kill me for it was on CSI. I didn't get into furries for a another year or so after wards but that's where i herd of it first :-[
When I look at furry most of it is porn and when its not porn (or something that looks remotely intimate) its something freaky or boring for me. haha sure, I'm just thinking capoeira requires a lot of watching the other player, everyone moment you're not watching your opponent, is a chance for him to get you. and even slow there are moments where you need to use your peripherals because you're facing the other way after a movement.

I would agree that porn is a big part of being a furry, but not EVERYTHING! That's what the public gets wrong. I'd love to have my own fursuit, but who many people here would want to where something like that during sex? That's what one of my friends seems to think it's about. :(
Do they know? No. It's not because I am embarrassed or afraid or worried how they might react if they found out. They do not know because I simply have not found any good reasons for their need to know. I realized a long time ago that while we might share the same roof, I was old enough to have privacy and they did not need to know every detail in my life, as I had thought necessary in the past. I can have my own secrets.
That being said, I have also tried to lay the bedrock so that either if the circumstances necessitated my revelations or if I came to the decision on my own, they would not be caught completely unawares. There is my History Honours essay all about Furries that they have never seen but might easily read in order to get the right facts. I have let it be known that I am actively searching for Bear, Fox and Wolf imagery. I have collected half a dozen Fox plushies over these past months and displayed them prominently. When I visited Disney World this past spring I was adamant that I meet the Fur Characters for the first time (as opposed to running in fear).
And how have they responded? Well, my Mother appears to mind the least. She did, after all, give me the Robin Hood: Most Wanted Edition and a Fox tree ornament last Christmas. My Dad doesn't seem to care one way or another, and my brother is a mundane completely disinterested with my life (as usual).

My wife had no idea about furry, at all, so I showed her some pictures from one of the bowling nights to explain a little. My wife then came with me to Howl, and the five of us all came bowling the next day. (The five of us being myself, my wife, and our three kids.) My seven year old daughter spent half of bowling making me walk back to the suiters to make more "furry friends" by hugging them. Now my wife is starting to look at trying to rent a fur suit via mascot stores!
My family knew I was into the whole draconic belief thing back when I was a hardcore otherkin (like, 8 years ago). This year, I made it no secret that I went to Anthrocon and had a total blast there, so yeah, all my family, my friends, AND my co-workers know I'm into the whole furry community thing.
I make myself out to be a respectable-enough guy that it doesn't make anyone think differently of me. That's the important part, I think. If you're already a strange-duck and people find out you're into furries, well... you're pretty much done.
My family knows. They dont care.
Of course I dont care if they do. Most of them found out because they snooped or looking in stuff that had nothing to do with them.
A couple of my family members know, none of them have a problem with it since I have fun. If I told some of the others I think they wouldn't like it and probably yell at me until they find a new reason to yell at me.
Ironic that this thread should be revived right now. Yesterday my mom was secretly reading over my shoulder while I was on here.
She was all like, "What does that say? 'BC Furries'?" Then I was all like, "Yep." Then there was silence. :P
I don't think she remembers the previous time I tried explaining it to her
I don't know what they would think of me if I ever brought the topic up again. It was such an embarrassment the first, I've been very secretive ever since. :-X
They already know I'm a little bit nuts because according to my doctor I really am. :P

Yeah I think I got lucky on that, my wife hasn't seen either of those episodes. But it's great because it makes it easier for me if the wife et all are with me.
Actually, when I first tried to explain it, my wife though I Fursuit was a euphemism ... :-X
The day I; and I whole heartedly pray it never comes, that I have to learn about my families sexual fetishes and what their groups of friends refer to eachother as... then they will find out I'm furry.

It's also because I've always loved mascots and wanted to be one, so what better option then to get my own fursuit?
As for what my family thinks:
My sister knows I'm gay and furry, she thinks it's awesome. She's the only one who knows. None of my family lives near each other (almost all of us 8 hours away from each other or further) so whatever they say to me doesn't really do much. It's my life, let me live it how I want. :>

i think that our animal instincts would stop us from destroying like humans do. animals ballance in an ecosystem. we have no ecosystem because we are human and we desroy everything we touch. at least we would be more earth friendly. at the verry least i think that we would make more steps to save our planet

haha, if my parents were to find out that i'm bi they wouldn't have any problem with it, we have a lot of gay relatives and are understanding about that, but when i was younger they caught me looking at some furry stuff, and i was given a hash talk and told to 'look at normal porn' if i even have to at all. :gay:

Yeah, I completely agree. Aphinity told me the same thing too.
I know I use to be like that. But now I don't really care. My brother probably knows what kinda stuff I draw too. And I find it an interesting topic to tell people.

Well... unfortunately all the times that I go to bubble tea, it is always in Richmond. Though there probably some place in Burnaby near REVS. Though I usually hit up bubble tea in Richmond after bowling heh heh.
There is a good bubble tea place near revs but it closes at 11:30pm I think.......
It's called Pearl Drops, it's on Willingdon near Hastings(it's a little bit expensive but SUPER GOOD)

I have only recently revealed that I am a furry to my family and well most of my friends have know for years (even if I didn't tell them :p)
My sister and brother have not said a peep to me so either 1)They don't care or 2)They are still in shock, I have not told my mother or father though. My mother I think would be fairly receptive and understanding to the idea I think (plus I think she already knows too) my dad on the other hand I have not spoken to in years and I don't know how well he would take to the idea of me being a furrie (he still doesn't know that I am bi!!!!)
Then there is my extended family, most of which embrace the fact that I am a furrie.
Kinda. I don't hide what I am. I openly wore cat ears for many years. Until I got new glasses then the headband dug into the arms of the glasses. Now it just hurt and my dog ate my spare pair.... My mom thought is was cool. My dad just looked at me funny. My step-mom.. I don't think she really gets it. I never outright told my brother but I'm sure my mom told him in some way. My DH(mate) thinks it's the coolest thing ever and loves when I run around in my ears and tail.
So in general. I do not hide what I am, however I don't shove it in people's faces. If someone asks, I'll tell them but that's that.
Now.. Does my family know I'm bi.... My mom does, my brother does, my GF ;) does and my mate does. Lol
My dad has made guesses but never outright asked and my step mom doesn't care either way.

anyways, my friends discovered i'm a furry yesterday. (i post this in this thread becasue my friends ARE my family) So, my roommate's girlfriend, who is apparently really perceptive, becasue only a month before i found out she thinks i'm gay (which is wrong, i'm bi, lol), she was harassing me over the contents of a package i recieved in the mail. she was contending it was a sex toy and i was doing my best to deny it. but it was furry art, and i couldnt think up a lie as to what it was in the box, so i just kept my mouth shut. anyways, after a while she gave up, and she just came out and said, "I think your a furry." and based on my facial expression she said, "I knew it!"
she didn't care, i think she has an understanding that it dosn't make me a freak, but i had to spend the rest of the night on damage control as my other roommate and a friend i had over had both seen 'that' episode of CSI. so we'll see in the next few weeks how everyone else i know reacts as they find out, as they inevetably will. but i guess its not so bad, they were treating me the same again by today. i just hope they don't start with the "i can't leave my dog alone with him anymore..." jokes. again. :-\

My family doesn't know, as obvious as it is. It's not like I keep it a secret or anything, in fact I keep it hidden from friends more than family. My sexuality is a different story. My mother -might- know, I'm not sure, but I haven't told her I'm gay. My new step dad doesn't have a clue, and his family tends to be a little... Sexist, so I don't think I'll be telling them, ever, about being a furry or being gay. A select few friends know I'm gay, but nobody outside of the fandom knows I'm a furry. As for my extended family, they tend not to take an interest in my affairs, but I have a small prediction that if I were to tell my aunts, they would be supportive, maybe even take an interest into the fandom. As far as art and porn goes, my mom knows I draw and look at anthro ART, but she's never caught me looking at anthro porn, and probably never will. But after all, if the question is risen, I'll tell. It's no secret.

Never had a problem with my family on it. Mostly because I've had weirder hobbies (What is a parent going to be more concerned about; That cute fox character, or the fact that their son is literally building a medieval artillery piece in the family workshop). Coincidentally, my parents didn't much mind the whole siege engine thing; I got design pointers from Dad on how to improve the floating-arm designs. ;D

They don't know, but I'm sure they'd be perfectly OK with it. The majority of my family is pretty out of the loop when it comes to pop culture (they don't watch CSI or anything else like that) so they don't have any preconceived notions about the fandom. And they know I like dragons & wearing my suit anyways.
On an off-topic note- it's good to see there are other siege engine enthusiasts here! I've competed in trebuchet contests in WA for the past few years now and it's a blast!

i made a trebuchet out of paper for a school project and it launched grapes 50 feet lol didn't last vary long and one it got to the teacher the teacher couldn't stop playing with it and broke it before he could grad it so he gave me an A lol lol he was tossing paper balls all over the clas room the entire period it was so funny

I don't think so, though they might suspect something's up, who knows, they don't pry into it too much anyways and I don't really intend to tell them, it's not particularily nessesary that my parents know about sexual kinks imho. Probably helps that fursuiting dosen't interest me tons and I don't have a fursona so much as a main character that I play.

Thanks :-3 It means alot. I'm fortunate that I've had excellent influences in my life that have encouraged me to be myself and live an uncompromising life (as much as possible!). I've had lots of encouragement from friends and community (even my job at the time!) and it helps that the responses have been almost totally positive- the very first night I wore it out to the bar I literally had girls chasing me around the dance floor- never, ever, been hit on that much before.
The funny thing is, the most nerve-wracking part is just before I step out in public... after that... I just get a big grin on my face and go have fun.
Some of my family knows now, some don't. I try to wear my jewelled collar everywhere i go, and have "fur life" and "furry" graphics on my truck, so when family asks I tell 'em, otherwise i don't offer information that doesn't concern them.
It came up in conversation on the phone with my mom a few weeks ago. I think we were talking about one of Gizmo's parties, :p
And as I figured. She didn't really care. I love my mom, lol

I think I've tried giving my mom subtle hints about me being furry, but she doesn't really understand.. plus, my mom doesn't know what a furry is... neither does my step-dad know, but I don't really give a flying ^&#$ about what he thinks.. and I haven't seen my actual father in so long.. though I think he might be a little more understanding about it.. heck, even probably join the furry fandom if he was still around.. but alas, he is sadly still amongst the unknown in this world and I have yet to be aware of his current whereabouts at this time..
I don't think my mum really cares, and she's so accepting of everything else - she knows I'm gay, and she's down with it, likes the girls I date, etc. I showed her my in-progress head today, and explained how I made it. She was super interested, spent a good deal of time laughing at me wandering around in a multicoloured foam mask, and told me I'm extremely creative and that she was proud of me.
So, I think she gets that *something* is going on, but I've always been into animal costumes, so this is nothing new for her. Putting a name on it wouldn't make a difference.
My parents know I'm a furry, they were actually impressed for the fact that they bought me the material for the partial suit that I made. But for they're sake, I don't suit in front of them all the time.

As long as I'm happy and healthy and safe, she doesn't care. In fact, she appreciates my honesty on these things, and that I can trust her.
I can now add that my dad knows i am a furry now, and he is cool with it!

I know! I was EXTREMELY fortunate to be adopted into a warm, loving home. My mom is my best friend in the world; we don't always get along, but I'm so, so lucky to have her in my life, to guide me and help me become all I can be.
I'm going to take a moment to push something very dear to me. Adopt, people. There are so many children who need great homes. If I hadn't been given up for adoption, I wouldn't be with my mom, and she's the best thing ever to happen to me.

My dad is ultra conservative and the first time I talked to him, he was like "oh, ok cool" and asked a couple questions like what we do, then asked a few more once I talked about suits and etc. The second time he asked "you don't do any of that weird stuff do you? I've heard some bad things." I told him that was all BS, and we just suit for fun, party and dance(plus bowling, skating and random buffoonery). He was cool with that! Over all he is cool with it.

I'm more 'fur curious' than anything, and no. My folks would have no clue. My wife pokes fun at me when she 'catches' me browsing furry sites, but that's about it.

As far as friends go, the few nonfur friends i have figered it out on there own and either said nothing or make the odd joke about it.
I honestly don't think being a fur is something someone should act like they are in the closet over. If it is presented to someone as just a crazy hobby it seems alot less negative and not a big deal. IMO the best thing to do when explaining it to family is focus on the positives. However i would mention there is an adult side that some choose to partake in. If they knew nothing about it they will learn that fact eventualy and it will look like you are hiding something and it will probably be blown out of perportion.

My Mother, Brother, and Father know I'm a furry. For the most part I don't think most of them fully understand the concept behind it aside from my brother who is completely disgusted with it. He doesn't hate me, but he does not aprove of my life style.
Most of my non-fur friends, and co-workers also know I am a furry. I kind of wear the tag proudly(without shoving it in peoples faces).
I want to think for the most part I'm a pretty normal and respectable person. I'm not socially awkward(least I dont think i am), and if people like me for who I am, it doesn't matter what my interests are.
My parents know. My dad never spoke to me about it. Mom thought it was wierd and that was that. Pretty much no further discussion, which I am COMPLETELY fine with because it would be too hard to properly explain things and is not worth my time.

some do, my pre-mom thinks it`s fine, i just talked to one of my sisters in ottawa couple of nights ago, she thinks it`s funny, and no weirder than anything else i do, my one sister in bellingham does not care, but warned me that i am making a business decision, for i do a lot of cons, and she thinks it might affect my sales, my sister and her husband in victoria are fine with it all, and my one nephew thinks it rocks, but at this time not all of my family know yet, but so far so good.
My grandma knows. She's pretty awesome and is fine with it after I explained I'm not part of the sex aspect. My mom is helping me with my fursuit, she kind a has an idea of what it is but is mostly "It's not drugs it's not unprotected sex, so it's fine" my friends think it's completely normal. But then two cosplay and ones into Victorian reenactment, so we aren't a "normal" group of friends.
I think my mom knows. I'm not sure though as I've never outright said "Hey mom I'm a furry" but I certainly don't try to hide my artwork or interest in animal cartoons/anthropomorphic characters and that sort of thing. She knows what furries are too (thanks CSI) and she helped me make a fursuit for halloween once. So, yeah I guess she knows but doesn't really care. I'm sure she compares it to other things I am a fan of, like Star Wars. Which is how I treat furry anyway - it's a hobby firstly for me, and I guess sort of a lifestyle second?
My brother also knows I guess. I've never made a big deal about it so it's never been an 'oh my god you're so weird' thing

With all the misconceptions surrounding the fandom, I think it's best not to involve them in that aspect of my life. If I'm ever asked, I won't deny it, but they'll need to ask.
I told my best friend (non-furry) over the weekend--felt like I had to, after he unwittingly helped me make a duct tape dummy last month (such a great friend!)--and I think he's cool with it. My sister knows about furries and I'd say she's going to find out I'm a furry in about two weeks, as soon as we hit Kotatsu :P
My mom's more accepting of the fact that I'm a furry, though I do get the sort of lecture that only an irresponsible individual would get regarding how the fandom involves people from all walks of life, and sexualities as if it was a bad thing. To be honest, I'm half baffled, and half WTF - especially with the comment that follows from her regarding how fursuiters are cowards whom don't like to show their real faces. I know I sort of talked her out of that...somewhat.

I 'broke' it to my parents by making them watch the furry episode of Fanboy Confessional with me. xD They're cool with it--or at least, they were after I got the 'there are creeps in every group' lecture. They view it as an artists' label like steampunk or anime.

They're kinda amused by it. They make fun of me about it, but it's honestly only in jest. They approach the fandom and my lifestyle with interest and curiosity. I love my folks.
