why are there so few emoticons? especially on a board whose users have wild imaginations, expressive personalities
i'm active on another board, damngoons, which has a stupendous display of emoticons, one for every possible situation lol
roadkill is my friend on goons, and i notice that here on bcfurs, he's forced to use the bobbing green blob over and over (it's the only emoticon that shows even a little personality)
personally, i don't use emoticons much, i like my text to speak for itself .. but i think a lot of folk are very attached to their EMOTISONAS
maybe it's all a SMF issue -- that their software sets a max on emoticons
It's a lack of ambition to add emoticons, not really a limit.
There's no limit to emoticons, but adding hundreds would clutter up the posting screen.
Even something as small as emoticons can change the look and feel of a board. I'll talk it over with the admin folks and we'll see how that goes.
Most forums display the first 20 or so icons with a button for more. In fact, every other forum I've seen does. I wouldn't be surprised if this one truncates after a certain number as well.
One way to find out, I suppose.
Strongly against the idea unless there's a way to turn off visibility of all emoticons.
Or at least a tab that has a drop-down (kind of like what you have on MSN)

lol i think i love it too
Ahahaha lol I just got "I LIKE TO MOVE-IT MOVE-IT!" stuck in my head when I saw all the birds!
I'm too lazy so I'll out-bird you by doing this:
:birdy: x 100
:birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy: :birdy:
Mod edit: Let the records state there were originally a lot of birds here, however too many birds crashes browsers on older systems (my work computer) so I pared it down a bit.

NOTHING could have prepared me for that!!!
I'm not even going to attempt to beat that! Congrats, the winner is .... YOU! ;D
Emoticons are good for replacing emotional states, voice inflections, or other forms of non-verbal speech on forums...so tell me folks, what kinds of emoticons are we missing?
How do you like the default emoticons, should they be updated?
Have people forgotten how to type emotions with ascii text? ;-)
Well, we don't have a cat face. :3
Though, we could use a more furry set of icons... These are a little simpsonsesque. :P
As for the typing old fashioned ascii emoticons... That's all I'm doing, it triggers what's there.
Any suggestions for a good emoticon for :3 ?
It must be:
- not too flashy
- about the same size as the other emotes
- similar to what's already up there
For instance a thumbs up would be nice (http://forum.electricpicnic.ie/images/smilies/thumbs_up_emoticon.gif)
Cat faaace. :3
Well, we already have two icons that are out of place. The birdy doesn't match, and neither does "Gay!"
On the other hand, the birdy is the only one there that is actually somewhat furry themed.
Furry.ca used the furcadia emoticons for their board. I'm not saying we should do the same, but we should at least replace what we have with furry related emoticons. :3 is just a regular furry smile, as mammal furs have the split lip.
If anyone can do pixel art we should have each emote be someone's fursona from the own forums lol. But yeah that wouldn't go well with the amount of people registered and new ones coming in but it did sound like a good idea at some point :-3
That was quick, someone already found the cat face!
Well its not hard to for cats to find their own faces  :-3
Of course you had to make it difficult and put a - in the middle of the :3 ...
lol, well it makes sense, :3 is still cute as well. :D Now that we have a  how about a thumbs down, hmm..? ;) hehe :-3

Oh wow, I was assuming the cat face would have affected posts including certain times (e.g. 11
:30 AM) but the algorithm appears to be smart enough to avoid it. I'll switch it over and see what happens.

Never mind, it's affected. Switching back to :-3
Oh yeah, forgot about that.
What about Space Colin Three?
I was sitting here wondering who Space Colin was.
I tried putting a space in before and after, however any spaces before/after emoticons get truncated in the forums software, so it reverts back to ":3".
Heh. phpBB allowed spaces... weird.
I guess SMF will only do it if you directly modify the database...
Oh well, thanks for trying.
I request one of these!
cause we don't have hugging emotes...
Please

Good idea, I used something similar to your first one but a little bit closer to our "colour scheme".
Yay ty
:-3 :highfive::police:
here's a thumbs down emote, pl0x? :) (http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e335/MoonMagickSanctuary/thumbs_down.gif)
a sharp tooth smile would be awesome really make it evil you know not just a devil
I might be a bit overwhelmed by DA having a bilion freaking smilie faces but idk the forums could use a bit more if its not too much of a problem (http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/l/la.gif)
no more than they are already so whats to worry about.
Need more animals. I think I only saw a cat. Or maybe you could turn all the emotes into various sets of animals, an people coul change it to a theme of a particular animal.
