: Raikon April 08, 2009, 08:20:18 -06:00
Well, since I'm such a nerd I had to bring this up...

For those of you who don't know, Magic is a popular TCG.  There are 5 different colours (white/blue/black/red/green) that you can make decks around to use.  The main objective is to knock your opponent's life down from 20 to 0 using various creatures and spells (sounds like pretty much every card game >_>).

I currently play every friday at the FNM (friday night magic) tournaments at Wally's down on Hastings.  I am also studying to become a judge and will be judging at the prerelease event for Alara Reborn at BCIT on April 25th.  I have been playing for a couple years now (a.k.a. huge nerd) so if anyone ever has any more questions about Magic the Gathering I'm willing to help out.

Ember, March of the Machines is such a cool card, good job.

As for decks....I've always been one who didn't enjoy netdecking much.  The only time I ever did was the Ravnica/TimeSpiral Dragonstorm deck, which also sows that I'm usually the combo deck player.  Time to take a trip down memory lane...(sorry if some of you have no idea about the cards I'm about to mention)

First deck: Platinum Angel/Diplomatic Immunity control.  First deck I ever made, out of random cards I liked just to play for fun with friends.

Deck 2: March/Station combo.  Thus why I say March of the Machines is awesome.  It was also my first FNM deck.

Deck 3: Kamigawa land/hand control.  This was an interesting deck, and Azami was awesome.

Deck 4: Dragonstorm combo.  Bringing out 4 big dragons in 1 turn was always a thumbs up for me.

Deck 5: Triskelivus control.  Urzatron to hold down spellburst, then just fly in with triskelivus.  Controls usually fun, as long as I don't think TOO much.

Deck 6: Megrim/Rack/Wistful Thinking combo.  Random fun deck I made, worked out a lot better then I planned.

Deck 7: Solarbeam (mana ramp/blaze combo).  Named after my original pokemon TCG deck,  land thinning like np.  Seedguide Ash was never though bad of again.

Deck 8: Dark Solarbeam.  Same idea, but ran with balck and Profane Command insted of blaze for more control options.

Deck 9: Dragon aggro.  Fun deck to make use of Dramatic Entrance, 8/8 turn 3 was so cool.

Current Deck: Solarbeam v2.  Banefire was too good to resist, along with Martial Coup.  White gave more control options, and ran rainbow for Exploding Borders.

I'm now waiting to see how Alara Reborn will turn out before I make my next deck.  All gold set...should be interesting.

P.S.  Last Sunday I judged my very first event, and got a pretty good review.  I'll also be judging the Alara Reborn prerelease, and will have a chance to take the L1 test and become a certified judge.

Make it friday and you got yourself a meet. If you don't already have a games shop in mind, I kinda wanna suggest a games shop I used to visit every friday night for magic and 40k battles. They have a huge back room with couches and a pool table. They order pizza and have those magic things where everyone pitches in for a box set and has a tourny.

I'm guessing you're talking about Mishra's.

If they aren't busy then I'm probably up for it, except that I'm usually playing at Wally's on fridays for FNM anyway.  Who knows though, I could maybe change my mind...the next couple weekends are pretty bad too.  I'll be judging the prerelease this Saturday at BCIT, followed by judging at the One Stop Shop on Sunday, then there's the VImeet and Vfurmeet.

I'm too used to standard though, so the most I'll probably have is 1-2 standard type decks on me, and maybe 1 old standard deck.  Although I've been really tempted to make a Mind's Desire deck for extended, that card was always fun.

P.S. ChiChi, ask David and mention to him about all of this, I'm sure he'd be up for it.

Nope. Mishra's actually moved to Brentwood mall. Has no back room to play in anyways, and even then, their old place was still pretty small.

Kaji: which place would this be? :p
I cant really remember the name but its a few block away from the Langley theater just off of highway 1. Their back room is practically warehouse sized with 3 long large tables for the tabletop games, about 10 other long tables for card games and board games, and then they have some couches and a pool table as well. Its a great place. If we went there on a Friday night (granted the place still exists) then we can also enjoy whatever else goes on there as well. I can bring my 40k army as well.

This is where it's located (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=49.177897,-122.664413&daddr=&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=17&sll=49.177825,-122.664714&sspn=0.002097,0.006909&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17)

After nearly dying from happiness after opening my entire box (36 packs) plus the 8 packs I won from playing in the small prrelease event at Wally's the day after, I have a good amount of the new set. (I've never opened so many packs in my life, and Max got 2 boxes for judging @_@)

I sadly have no idea what place you're talking about, since I usually only play in the Vancouver area.

I'm also taking a sort of hiatus from Magic, at least until the new rules get smoothed in.  I'll still be watching it and judging, but as for playing I'm probably gonna wait a bit.

I'm not sure if anyone's interested, but the Worldwake Prerelease is on January 30th.  I'll be helping judge the big event at BCIT.  It will start at 8:30-9am with a couple 32person sealed events along with a large sealed event later in the day, followed by many rounds of booster drafts, 1-2 more 32person flights, and even some draw prizes near the end of the day.  Also, if anyone does go and is looking for me, I'll be most likely the tallest judge there (there's 1 judge as tall as me, but I don't think he's coming), or you can just ask any of the judges for Sasha.

P.S.

People still buy M:tG?  Damn, I thought after pulling crap like Platinum Angel and planeswalker cards, people would see how massive the power creep is and stop.  Especially since portal was banned because of how powerful it was, then they reprinted cards from it in legal sets.  I remember the days when a 4/4 creature was amazing.  Now I see a 10/10 indesctructible for 10 mana.  Yeesh.

You feel very strongly about something you seem to know very little about :\

Of course the power level has to creep up, otherwise the new set would seem weak compared to the older sets- also it would kill innovation in extended and T1. Still, they reset the power level down a bit every so often

Platinum Angel is not overpowered by virtue of it being both an artifact and a creature- it dies to a LOT of targeted removal. Further, at the 7 mana mark the cost restriction is pretty prohibitive. Platinum angel was restricted to being used in reanimator style decks (including welder), or oath type decks (with whatever oath like engine )

Outside of that, it was occasional used by UW style control decks running either the Urza lands or the cloud lands- in which case the most useful feature of Platinum Angel was that it held no coloured mana cost as the lands produced colourless. In those decks, the finishing card is almost irrelevant.

Was it good? Sometimes. But it was always the target of engines, it was pretty terrible on it's own.

Darksteel collosus, Which is a 11/11 indestructible for 11 mana (I assume that's what you meant, because there is no 10/10 indestructible for 10 mana in the game) is the same in that it found limited usage in engine based decks. (Proteus Staff, reanimator/welder) Darksteel Collosus was pretty much NEVER played for the mana cost. If you can't find a way to win before you can hardcast an 11 mana spell, you are terrible at this game.

Portal was banned because it was a set meant for players to learn the game- the rules were modified in portal greatly. Many of the cards in portal would not work with the normal game. Further, they didn't want the price of portal cards being pushed upwards by veteran players sniping for the few good cards in the set, putting the cost out of the reach of new people just trying to learn.

They started reprinting select portal cards in normal sets at the request of players who wanted specific portal only cards for legal play- people who were complaining for the exact same reason you are.

Planeswalker cards were pretty pimp tho :p

I'd rather not get into this argument and after this post I will not comment on it at all.  But when a game makes older cards simply useless, the creep has grown too strong.  Now before you say it, yes I know some older cards still rock.  I'm also annoyed by the new rules.  Apparently, rather than damage being persistent and only leaving your creatures at the cleanup phase, damage is removed at the end of combat.  Also, I here tell that they are removing mana burn.  Sure, that's a good idea.  To hell with teaching people about resource conservation.  And I bet you're going to find some way to re-butt all this but you're not going to be changing my opinion.  I remember back when they banned Lightning Bolt because it did three damage for one mana, and they said they would never unban it due to it being too powerful.  Now I see a card that costs two mana, white and red, and both deals 3 damage and gives you 3 health.  Did they forget or do they simply not care about that anymore?  I would also love to see the return of banding.  Lots of people thought it was a garbage ability but it was amazing.  It took away the opponents ability to decide how damage is dealt to multiple blockers.  And again, I hate the idea of planeswalker cards.  The whole story point of the game is the players are planeswalkers and are summoning monsters and casting spells at each other.  Now I am sure people are going to say something like "Who cares?  It's just a game."  yes, it is a game but that game is very heavily story driven.  The cards are all based on books an whatnot.  But whatever, you guys take your new magic and have fun.  I'll be here playing in local tourneys of classic players where tactics was a much bigger issue.  Again, you are going to say something about new magic is still tactical and while it is, it's not as much as the old one.  That's the end of my post and I will not be posting again in this section after saying my piece.  Oh also, don't just go saying I know nothing about this or things along that line.  That's rude and I would prefer to keep a mature attitude.  I was stating my opinion about the game, not talking about the knowledge or intelligence of other players.  Lets keep things civil without any level of name calling please.

There are so many things wrong with that novel paragraph including that fact that you basically contradicted yourself and made yourself look like one of the most close-minded people I've ever seen, but for the sake of this thread I won't jump on the bandwagon and instead will try to come up with some relevancy.  I don't care if you never see this, I won't let all of these flaws and contradictions go unanswered for!  *Phoenix Wright pose*

1.  I highly doubt MtG used mana burn to teach people about conserving resources.  It is a game after all, not a documentary.  The reason mana burn was taken out was because good players could easily work around it and newer players found it something really hard to remember while trying to learn the game.  It made perfect sense and nobody I knew had any problem with that change.  Also, just for fun let's look at Yugioh.  Their only resource is sacrificing people/monsters to play more powerful cards.  I highly doubt Konami wants the world to form a cult.

2.  I don't know where you heard that combat damage is removed at end of combat, but to my knowledge that is completely false.  All they changed damage wise was it no longer using the stack when resolving.

3.  Lightning Bolt really isn't that great of a card.  The only reason they would have banned it is because Magic back then was a lot faster and they got tired of every deck running 4 of it and just blasting the opponent's face in.  Now Magic has much steadier gameplay.  Yes it's a good burn spell; No it won't ensure you victory anymore.

4.  Lightning Helix (the deal 3 gain 3 card you mentioned) really isn't that great of a card.  It's cool and fits in with its colours, but the multicolour made it only usable in a couple decks or forced people to fit those colours into their decks.  Multicolour cards are supposed to be better, it's a pat on the back for fulfilling its harder then other cards' mana requirements.  I do think that multicolour decks have gotten a lot easier to make recently, but that still doesn't mean that multicoloured spells are as easy as other spells and people that can play them should be allowed that bit of extra benefit.

5.  Nothing much to say on banding.  It was hilarious, but all it did was confuse newer players and make better players laugh at the near-pointlessness of it.

6.  As said before, MtG is a game.  It was never trying to follow the books other then that characters in it.  Adding planeswalkers actually made sense.  Sure it took a bit to get used to the change but it added a whole new vivid and interesting aspect to the game.  I know there's still a lot of people that dislike planeswalkers, but making them actually tied the game more to the book by matching the personalities and styles of the characters in the books with the abilities of the cards.

7.  Yes, tactics are a lot different from 5-10 years ago.  They aren't gone though, they're just different.  Every move still requires thinking and strategy.  Of course tactics would change as more cards are introduced.  Just because it's a different style of play doesn't mean it's any better or worse then before.  If you prefer the older style of playing that's fine, just don't go criticizing opinionating it just because you don't like it.

Sorry if this seems really long, but I wasn't going to let all of these unsupported, impetuous 'opinions' on a game I play and work for sit there without being dealt with.

P.S.  There is no 10/10 indestructible for 10 mana.  You're either thinking of Darksteel Colossus (an 11/11 for 11 mana), Ulamog (a 10/10 for 11 mana I doubt you even know exists if you pay no attention to the current game), or Progenitus (a 10/10 for 10 mana that is not only not indestructible, the mana cost is 2 of each coloured mana making it pretty ridiculous to play in the first place).

Too late.  I know I killed this thread by pointing out a bunch of flaws in a certain post, but I've been hearing an increase in the number of furries that are playing so I figured I'll check and see if it's true.  I don't know if anyone is interested or if this is just a wasted post, but if there are still people interested in trying to get together I'd rather take the 2 minutes to make this post rather than have everyone who wants to looking around blindly.

Oh gods.  A friend of mine bought that toolkit or whatever it is called and I wanted to throw it out the window.  A 7/7 for 9 mana with annihilate 1 (Every time this creatures attacks, the opponent must sacrifice 1 permanent).  Or something like that.  But what got me was "Holy crap, this is a common?!"  Stuff with abilities like that should be powerful legends like the original Nicol Bolas  "When Nicol bolas deals damage, your opponent must discard their hand."  And they are colourless creatures rather then gold.  Hell, by looking at the artwork it should be a full rainbow gold.  And there are a couple uncommon versions of them in that box.  I don't want to bring up the power creep thing but that is way too strong.  And before saying it is easy to kill them, two cards from the old sets.  Inviolability and Diplomatic Immunity.  That set made me die a little bit inside.  I am thinking about buying it but only because it has 100 land cards.

I don't want to bring up the power creep thing but that is way too strong.

With that out of the way I'll go back to the relevant topic, which is you thinking a bad card is amazing.  I stared at the card for a good while and don't see anything that makes that card good.  7/7 for 9 mana is mediocre.  Colourless mana ya maybe it's ok, but it's P/T is still low.  I'm pretty sure it's the ability that you think is great, which it really isn't.  Sac 1 permanent when it attacks?  Already 3 things wrong with that.

1.  It needs to attack, and has nothing (on its own) to protect itself from getting removed way before that.  Diplomatic Immunity?  Okay have fun getting 11 mana to try and make it safe.
2.  It's 9 mana!  I don't care if it's a 7/7, that much mana to 'possibly' make your opponent sac something is horrible.
3.  This is the one that really matters.  You have absolutely no control over what your opponent sacrifices.  Want to know what happens 99% of the time?  They sac a land.  They feel practically no harm from it.  Remember it costing 9 mana?  Yeah I'm pretty sure by then they have enough lands to really not care about losing 1 a turn by that point.

If you were asking for advice or giving constructive criticism I would treat you more seriously.  Instead you're trying to rant about and flame a game you supposedly dislike because of how it has changed.  This is a thread for people to talk about a game they enjoy or discuss (constructively) things that are bad about the game.  You're just complaining about everything you think is horrible about the game (which has been proven to be wrong every time).  So either start putting thought into what you say about the game or get out.

P.S.  I'd much rather have Diplomatic Immunity on my 'overpowered' Platinum Angel k thanks.

: Raikon August 03, 2010, 03:22:20 -06:00
What Malicai said.  If you want a decent idea deck wise though, anti control is pretty much mono red aggro with Manabarbs.  If you get it in play, you're pretty much guaranteed to win against control.

That or another control deck, but have fun spending an hour on one game.

Off the current topic but I just checked out the archenemy packs that came out.  This game is so damn...FUN.  Seriously, I love Magic Archenemy with the whole scheme deck.  Reminds me of the old vanguard cards.  It is like something me and some friend came up with in highschool.  One guy had a deck not restricted by the ban/restricted list and has to beat two other people.  But this thing is just damn awesome.  Plus the black deck had a card that a friend of mine had but it was stolen years ago.  Yeah some ass stole his Avatar of Woe when it came out and he got it as a gift, now he got a replacement.  Yes I still believe some cards are overpowered but I can totally ignore it and just have fun with the Archenemy game.  Seriously, this is really fun and I suggest you guys grab it and try it out.

Scars of Mirrodin has officially been released for a couple days.  I want to know what everyone thinks about it in terms of constructed play, limited (drafting) play, and it's relation to the original Mirrodin set.
: Re: Magic the Gathering
: Arcane_Fox October 04, 2010, 01:38:38 -06:00
Scars of Mirrodin is amazing.

At first I was afraid of what to play Post-Rotation (Type II, I suck at limited >_<), seeing as I played Naya but traded my Vengevines for a set of force of wills (I added a few things too obv.)

But I'm trying out this mono-black deck w/ Phylactery Lich, and frankly, I love it, Mimic-Vat is so under-rated (As is Sword of Body and Mind ~ looooooove that card). Wurmcoil Engine is just plain ridiculous and Ratchet Bomb gives me a way to kill plainswalkers/tokens/artifacts/my own persecutor/mana dorks/fauna shamans/etc.

I still feel weird playing a deck without BSA tho ....

PS: Any1 going to champs on sat.? I am =3

Even though I did not read the entire thread I just wanted to say that I too play MTG every Friday night at the Clayton's Mall here in Sechelt. We have an average group size of 6-15 people and I have been playing (not consistently though) ever since Mirage/4th ed came out back in 1995 I think it was. I have way to many decks to list what I play. I play at the local non-standard tournaments occasionally (when they are up and running anyways) otherwise I am a casual player that enjoys playing the game more than wining. Because to me it's all about having fun with friends and if I win well that is just an added bonus xD

I have been curious about this as there seems to be a few more MTG player showing up in our community as of late.
What formats do you all play? Personally I am a 'broad spectrum' player when it comes to the formats available and have several decks that are tailored for each type of format. My personal favorites are EDH and Teams  ^_^

Edit: I forgot to mention that I am more of a casual player than anything, but my group here on the coast likes to mix things up so we play a variety of different formats like: EDH, Assassin, Two-Headed, Team, 5-Star, Arch Enemy, and Emperor.

I played as a kid, and still have ~2000 cards kicking about.  They're getting super dusty,  but if people want to play casually FFA or simple team matches, I'm down for that.  I don't know any tournament "formats" or how they work, unfortunately.  I'm also out of date on the current rules, but I know the basics well enough to handle that.  Plus, I can supply about 5 - 6 semi-decent decks for learning with.
: Re: MTG Players. What Format?
: Skitkat December 25, 2010, 11:21:35 -07:00
I've been getting back into it (since stopping after highschool) because my gaming group likes it. We spend a lot of time playing 2v2s, but we've been eyeing the scheme packs (one versus three). Playing with more htan two people always seems more fun, as there's more strategy involved, and we get to play around with variant rules like team life pools and friendly targeting.

I personally have about seven decks. I don't know the current tournament rules, though, so I couldn't tell you if any of them are tournament legal - I just know which ones are fun to play and which aren't fun to play against. Funny how they're usually the same.

We've also played around with the idea of doing our own single draft, but we haven't committed to spending the money, so, for now, it's just free matches and teams. :3

Ultimately, I don't think we know a lot of the more traditional formats. A lot of the ones you mention, for instance, Roxxy, I'm unfamiliar with. What's Emperor?

'tis okay ^^
I have only played assassin once and from my experience with it, it was quite challenging to play out because the deck I was using was designed to eliminate all my opponents with massive amounts of damage/life drain. My ex'es stuffy doll deck won that game. Frigging stuffy stuffy doll Prototype Portal combo >_<

AE on the other hand is only good if the Arch Enemy is the beginner and the rest of the players are all seasoned Vintage players with decks that have power 9 cards in them! Okay I might be exaggerating a wee bit there X3
The idea of Arch Enemy is that everyone at the table has at least some experience with the game under their belt because the Arch Enemy has the upper hand with his Scheme cards that are used before and after the other players turn.
To give you an Idea of the power of the Scheme cards I will provide a few links to a couple of the scheme cards I have in my Scheme Deck.

Is there some sort of deck builder where you tell it what cards you have and it tells you the best deck you could make with those?
: Re: Magic the Gathering
: J.R.Bear October 30, 2012, 12:44:28 -06:00
There are a very large number of variables involved with creating a MTG deck. As far as I am aware there is no program that can tell you what the best deck is. There are some programs and websites out there that can run virtual games against your deck to test it though.

Allot of it is trial and error, knowing your rules, and being prepared for anything :P

If you ever want to hand out and build / play / test I'm game.

Either my place or a shop, I've got too many cards to transport so I normally only bring my rare binder if I go to a shop.
I live on 6th street in Burnaby, maybe I can help ya out with a few cards or trade a few :3

Also one of my favorite card search sites Magiccards.info
They allow you to search by pretty much anything.
edition, name, rules, types, colors, cost, power, toughness, converted mana cost, loyalty, rarity, format, and even by artist. (Few more which I left out)

So if your ever looking for cards that do specific things they will give you a good grasp.

They also, when you pull up a card will give you the specific rulings about it.

Another one I like is Cardkingdom.com
When you search for a card they also bring up a list of cards that other people have bought to go along with that card. this can lead to some ideas that you may not have thought of.

So I'm going to do a Standard game this Friday, was wondering if there were any tips on what to play.
Rares and above that I have are Isolated Chapel, Battle of Wits, Cyclonic Rift, Steam Vents, Carnival Hellsteed, Grave Betrayal, Deadbridge Goliath, Loxodon Smiter, 2xPithing Needle, Grimgrim Corpse-Born, Deathrite Shaman, Pack Rat, Death's Presence, Supreme Verdict, Redirect, Devastation Tide, Hound of GriselBrand, Drowned Catacomb, Wild Defiance, Ash Zealot.

Anything in the Angelic Might, Solitary Fiends, Fiery Dawn, Selesnya Surge sets

These I believe are expired from Standard unless they've been reprinted but I'll list them for interest:
2x Sprouting Thrinax, 2x Whirling Dervish (these have "DCI" as the set)

Grand Abolisher, Gideon Jura, Sutured Ghoul, Sunpetal Grove, Rites of Flourishing

Sets: Sacred Assault, Grab for Power

@rainrat  It's tough to get into standard.  the new event decks are an amazing way to start. The even deck gives you a strong core to build around.

@buddy I have a lot of foils and I'm sure I have at least on in my foil stuff ill take a look  tonight

So, I did go the Friday Night Magic, and Whovianart was right. I finished about middle of the road; I think that I tried to squeeze by with too little land.

I had couple people try to mill me, not one attempt succeeded. I'm not saying I won them all, but noone made me run out of cards.

Don't know how much luck you'll have on $1 for 200 standard cards most sell for $0.25 each and at bulk might be lucky to go $10 for 100-150 cards

anywhos ive been working around the idea of building my Ur-Dragon EDH deck for some time and i finally got around to putting some cards together.
only problem is ive eliminated down to 120 cards and i need to get to 100. been pacing back and forth over the cards and cant decide what to cut.

http://www.mtgdeckbuilder.net/Decks/ViewDeck/370457 (http://www.mtgdeckbuilder.net/Decks/ViewDeck/370457)

Scion the Ur-Dragon is my champion

any suggestions on things to take out or replace?

because its a dragon deck it needs a fairly heavy early game mana ramp seeing as how most of the dragons are around 6cost
ive tested through about 6 or seven plays with all 120 cards, and i seem to be doing pretty good to mana ramp to 6 average turn three or four.

I'm basing that offer on sites like http://sales.starcitygames.com/buylist/ (http://sales.starcitygames.com/buylist/) - for bulk common/uncommon - 3.00 per 1000 cards. I felt that I was being generous.

Oh, and I've never played EDH, so I can't help with that. Wouldn't mind learning though.

shops are different :P they have a constant influx of cards. players want to get a little something more in return for their cards although i guess it all depends on condition, edition, and repetition of the cards as well

as for EDH its not hard to get into rules are fairly simple and close to the same.
-deck consists of 100 cards. 99 single copies in your library (cant have more than one of the same named card) and 1 champion
-champion is a legendary creature and your deck can only consist of cards in your champions color. ex: Zedruu the Greathearted, 1colorless 1r 1w 1blu, your deck can consist of red white and blue cards (and artifacts)
-mulligan rules are different and better imo called partial paris where you pick which cards you dont want put them to the side and draw one less. ex: start with 7 cards in hand, drop 5 and draw 4. that leaves you with 6, you can repeat this process down to 1 card
-as for combat you start with 40 life, but if you can deal 21 commander damage you can also win.
-you commander sits in the commander slot on the side of the field, it costs his regular mana cost to play him, and if he is removed from the field (aside from to you hand or your deck) he returns to the commander slot and cost an additional 2 colorless more to play for each time he returns to the commander slot

i think that pretty much sums it up, its a fun style of play

there is also planes chase (playing on a global effecting field that can be shifted) and archenemy (everyone vs one player that has extra powers) if you haven't tried them yet they are also great ways to switch it up a bit.

whats really fun is an 3 way EDH, each player has an archenemy deck all while playing planes chase. don't think it can get more randomly fun than that.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/first-golgari-deck-1/ (http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/first-golgari-deck-1/)

Critiques and card suggestions are most welcome I know it definitely needs 2 more Rancors and 3 champion of Lambholts in there. considering dropping one Akroma's Memorial to Sideboard (I know it has a high cost however if a game should last that long that does allow me to easily make that final push if I can get it into play which is why it is main board or at the very least distract my opponent long enough to get one of my deck strategies into play)

Went in to pay rent today. Wally's got packs of Mirage, Revised, The Dark and I think a few other old old sets. Mirage and Dark were $10/Booster. Revised I think was $65/booster.
Just if anyone is feeling nostalgic.
: Re: Magic the Gathering
: professor whovianart May 30, 2013, 01:32:43 -06:00
65.00 per pack?, wow, i used to sell them for 2.50, but of course that was when dual lands were only 10.00 each.

the dangers of buying the early packs (revised and older), is that one could actually look at what the cards are in a pack without actually opening them (no kidding, test me).
: Re: Magic the Gathering
: Elnath May 30, 2013, 07:21:35 -06:00
Doesn't surprise me. But I wouldn't buy packs for that much, I only ever used cash value as a means of determining trade value. I wouldn't pay much in the way of cash for any magic card, unless I thought it would save me from buying packs upon packs of a set I didn't like in order to find one I card I wanted... Speaking of which, before I go buying more Homelands from the shop, does anyone have a Didgeridoo that's in good shape?

I'm totally new to MTG, played Duels of the Planeswalkers a bit, but really want to get into the real thing.

I'm going to head to Stronghold Magic on Monday and figure out what kind of deck I want to build and use.

I'm thinking of getting into Modern. I have a decent collection of INN-RTR-THS cards I could use.

With the recent bannings there isn't really a consensus I see on what decks are good.

Option 1:
Just running some powerful creatures ie Tarmogoyf using established list. Currently combo decks are big in the format and the game may not last that long. Also those good creatures can be expensive, and while I could afford it, a ban or reprint would destroy the value.

Option 2:
Run a combo deck myself. I doubt that my INN-RTR-THS collection would provide many of the pieces, and the critical piece is usually expensive. Also combo decks tend to get affected by banning.

Option 3:
Super-fast red deck, possibly splashing black or white for discard or answers to combo decks. My current collection would provide ample cards, although some would be less than the optimal choice. I'm also aware that many decks will be prepared for decks like this and wreck the whole plan.

: Re: Magic the Gathering
: Ro Ro Ro February 02, 2015, 10:03:17 -07:00
If you're planning on getting into modern, consider that Modern Masters 2 is coming out soon. I've heard there will be a larger print run, so I doubt it will do what the original modern masters did and raise the price of many decks. Holding off until it comes out might be a good bet.

I'm thinking of dropping out of standard myself, because when Wizards implements the new block release structure, it will be far too hard to keep up with. The prices of standard cards may go up too, depending on how draftable it will be.

If I were to get into modern, I would go for Affinity. Its a relatively cheap, competitive start to the format, and its threats are so diverse that a single banning couldn't stop it. That's me though. I'm a green player, and this deck with its synergies and beater creatures seems like my kind of style.

Pick what you are going to have the most fun with. Red is going to be fast, combo is going to be highly interactive and mentally stimulating, and a list with the high efficiency creatures like Tarmogoyf is going to feel very similar to what you would find in the current standard. Maybe brewing is your thing. Whatever you go with, remember that the focus is playing good, fun, magic.  ;D

: Re: Magic the Gathering

Not legal as Commanders by Rules As Written.

I might allow it in a casual game. Otherwise, I'd suggest running a 5-colour commander and using some green/black cards to tutor/retrieve it from the graveyard.

: Re: Magic the Gathering
: Shiro February 23, 2015, 11:12:58 -07:00
We aren't using "just any old creature" as our comander.  The nephilim are legendary creatures in definition, not by rule. To too it of they're also the only 4 colored cards that come close enough to fit as your comander.

We're not anarchists, we're casual players.

Yeah, I've got a few Commander decks. My favorite is Lazav, Dimir Mastermind. Lots of steal and copy; it's fun because you get to play with cards you wouldn't normally, and come up with strategies on the fly, and it self-adjusts to the power level of the table.

I most likely posted in this thread back when I had assumed the form of Roxy, but I still play mtg....occasionally.  Mostly I have commander and tiny leaders decks. For commander decks I have three that use the French Ban list (competitive deck lists): Teferi, Temporal Archmage (control, combo), Skittles (control, infect) and Food Chain Prosh (combo). My Tiny Leaders are Daxos of Meletis (control, voltron) and Thellon of Havenwood (beat down). Then I have two multiplayer deck lists: Vorosh, the Hunter (beat down) and Teneb, the Harvester(control). I only have one casual 60 card deck and that is Super Fungus (combo). Then  for shits and giggles I have 3 pauper decks (in paper form, lol): Gobblins, Slivers and Cyclops Smash. I am also slowly working on a budget Pox deck for legacy. One of these days I shall drag my scaly carcass and cards into town for a couple of games, if  there are people who actually want to meet me in the flesh....

OOH great. If you have Thurs off, every second week there's game nights at RainRat's. Rat plays magic, mostly Standard, but he still whoops my ass (I play modern [well, what ever the fuck I want])>.< My deck was alright, then I modded it and it turned to shit, so I'm working on a new one that looks pretty good (I may proxy it for game night, see how it tests).

But,

Come to game night. It's chill and relaxed, usually not an overflow of people ATM, but that changes every now and then.

I can meet you at Lougheed Mall, 5-ish, on Thursday (there's a couple game stores we can check out, beforehand) then go to RainRat's.
