So is anyone going to see this when it comes out?  Is it worth seeing?
Presumably all the kids that watched it have grown up by now, so maybe it'll be a good movie?

You got the title of the thread wrong, it's Dragonball, not Dragonball Z. It's gonna be great. Maybe people who aren't fans won't like it, but fans of the series will like it.

LOL dragoncubes....

I'd like to see it, although it's not too high on my list.  If a bunch of people go though I'll probably come with.

P.S. Rat I'm so glad you aren't like that when we play games o.o I know now not to get on your bad side.

I heard friday and I already have to decline >_>

I'm too busy nerding it up that day (in a different sense then seeing a Dragonball movie) although maaaaaaybe I'll change my mind.  I'll see Rat tomorrow so maybe he can force me to come (if he can beat me at PPL that is! Mwuahahahaha......yes it's sad, I'm looking for any excuse to get him to play with me >_>)

Ok so ive seen thsi movie Twice now in theaters with two totally different groups:
1. Hard to impress Animoo Otakus
2. Harder to impress gooftards who cant think of a serious moment in their life, and to further the experiment, half of them were stoned.

My own personal thoughts first and foremost:

For a person who has not watched Dragonball ever since Goku missed with the spirit bomb during that fateful fight against Freeza, i must say im amazingly impressed with how well executed the movie as a whole was.
Of course you have the occasional bad line, some teeth grindingly noticable string pulling, and areas of fake enthusiasm shining through like a steel turd in the afternoon. But from all of its faults: its mere nitpicking.

The film was enjoyable. The dialogue was for the most part solid, the choreography was fun to watch, the story was quite solid with some nice pulling of the heart strings, some great performances by the actors given the subject matter and direction of a PG film. They even manage to do some holy-crap killing and get away with it.
I wont spoil anything here, but i will say this: Its not earth shattering, but its not bad either. Its only earth shattering in how broken to pieces my expectations were when the end credits rolled.

And especially after watching Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, i have to say this was a very pleasant surprise!

Overall: 6.5/10 ]-----------------------------------[]------------------------[
Impression: Check it out in theaters for a good time. But the movie is a rental at best once it comes out. Get it, shut the brain off, get your buddies around, and enjoy.

As for the two groups of friends:
Group 1: Thumbs up all around
Group 2: Thumbs sideways and Up, 45* angle if you will.

For me it was certainly enjoyable for the complete fail factor. Basically the only reason I saw it was to see how wrong it was from the true anime. Everything was way off except for a few points here and there in the story and the characters names. Other than that, nowhere close to the anime. Complete fail in my eyes, but an entertaining movie to laugh at non the less.

Actually one must understand that they never intended to follow the Anime verbatim. They took the important elements (7 Dragonballs: check, quest to find em all: check, Staple characters: check, Dragonballs can summon a dragon for 1 wish: check) and that was it.
The reason for this is, if they followed the Anime, itd be FAR more rediculous of a plot than it already is.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but Dragonball's story isn't exactly "good", its merely "passable" until the next episode. Do something and then have the characters grunting for 25 minutes. No substance and ends up being seasons long per fight.

Remember, if they were to follow the storyline to the Anime, itd never be done. You have Goku growing up and then what, get into Dragonball Z. Itd be like saying that if a Live Action Simpsons Movie were to be made, it better follow everything from season 1 and on. haha.
The producers had to condense it somehow into an hour and a half - two hours. The best way is to do what hollywood does best: start from scratch. After 2 and a half hours of watching real life goku try to become familiar with the Kamehameha, thats 80,000,000 they jsut spent on that movie, and onto the next one? Its not economically feasable. In fact THIOS dragonball movie cost $100,000,000 to make, and they will not be turning a profit, even though they set it up for a sequal.

Overall, what they did was the right move, and theres no doubt some people would be pissed at it, but cant win em all.

on the other hand, Andrzej Bartkowiak can burn in a fire for the Doom movie. Couldn't have missed the point further.

Well whatever they did cover, I wish they could have done it closer to the anime.

The anime was epic, and is still extremely popular. They could have at least set it as he was an adult because in no episodes of the anime was Goku 18. He was either a kid, or an adult... which is just sad really... I think he should have at least been ten stories high like he should have been as a monkey XD

Another remake basically. Kinda like they tried to do with the hulk. Heard that just turned out as bad as the first one. But yah, I hope they try again. And by they, I mean the proper creators...the Japanese. They know how to do things right.

the new Hulk was made by Marvel studios themselves, and turned out rather well actually. I believe its the least grossing of the Marvel directed remakes (like Ironman for example) simply due to low expectations and to my memory, not alot of hype.

Yeah off-topic but the latest Hulk movie was surprisingly good and definitely done according to canon and the comic books which made it so worthy of watching for this comic book fan.

Haven't seen Dragonball yet wasn't a big fan of the shows so I probably will just wait till it appears on one of the movie channels.

My problem with this movie, aside from it being totally different from the anime and manga, were plot holes.  Little ones I can let slide but come on.  That unnamed ninja lady (I wont use here anime name because her name was never said outloud in the movie) just out of the blue has transformation powers that never get explained?  Hey writers, you were supposed to be watching Dragonball, not Naruto.

-snort-

Yeah, the way I'll end up watching this movie is the same way I ended up watching Twilight; the only reason to do so is for the overwhelming chance to point and laugh.

But then, I'm die hard when it comes to anime and manga. I don't believe they should ever be made into real life movies.

I haven't seen this, and by all of my DB fan friends who have seen this, their reaction is to not bother; it really is that bad.  Comparable to the Devilman live action movie, which was just odious, and not even worth watching for the fail factor.

Anyway I've just started watching the series again, now up to the Piccolo arc.  And, being the first time as a "proper" furry that I'm watching it, I'm noticing an awful lot of furry characters in it.

: Kardrack  December 30, 2009, 11:56:46 -07:00That unnamed ninja lady (I wont use here anime name because her name was never said outloud in the movie)
Not Mai, surely?!? (Shuu was my favourite character from DB.)
: Kardrack  December 30, 2009, 11:56:46 -07:00Hey writers, you were supposed to be watching Dragonball, not Naruto.
ROFLMAO!

Come the third Tenkaichi Budokai (the one when he fights Piccolo), he is 18; he's 12 in the first, 15 in the second (the one with Tenshinhan), and 18 in the third.  He just grows physically during that 3-year period.

A local friend told me he liked this movie and he was arguing that it perfectly followed canon.  I replied with the back of my hand to his face when he said that even if the characters are changed, the movie is still following canon perfectly.  Stupid people must be smacked.

best live action film based on anime was city hunter starring jackie chan!! (I am joking..)
This scene rules all:
Jackie Chan is Chun Li (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55Z48SMWSHs#normal)

Blue wins a box of cookies.  And the movie would have been better if they cast Jackie as Roshi or something.  Yeah he could probably play a perverted old martial artist pretty well.
