: What if... There was no internet?
: Blue Dragonwolf February 11, 2010, 05:47:30 -07:00
Question: What would the furry fandom be with out internet? Of cours we have our small grathrings and cons still maybe but as a whole will we be doomed and fade, or would we still servive as a fandom with out it?

As for me I would never see another fur as long as I live cause 95% of furries (just guessing that number) doesn't show or tell others of there furryness so one can never know that the person next to them is a furson hehe.

Also what would you do? Would you still be a furry if there was no interacting with others?

As for me I still would but maybe others may "grow out" of it. (don't know hence why I ask)

The reason for this "doom" style question is because I heared that "the powers that be" are reseting the net and going to take away Alot of stuff "they" don't want this year or the next, so I wounder if "furry" is on there list. And even if you don't belive that the internet is going to be on a leash it is still an insighful question I think :p

No internet = No furries? What do you all think?

i think no internet no FOX news or depressing crap like that. the internet is another way to spread gloom and doom for the media. hell any one can spread gloom cause of the internet. think of what the would would be like with out it? we'd still be reading and writing letters and mailing them to our loved ones. we would become civil again.

In all honesty, if I had to drop being a furry, I could do it with ease. I'm not really into it as most, since I'm more of a weeaboo anyways. I'd be super bored if there's no internet actually. It gives me something to do when I am bored.

The world would have basic technology, and we'd be living simple lives. Sadly enough though I met most of my friends through the internet. Both local and distant.

I can see both good and bad things about the internet, but meh, I can't live without it. Sadly.

Then we'd all go old-school - advertise cons and meetups in the backs of furry magazines.

Yup, most likely this - remember, furry was around for years before the Intertubes got connected, it just became more accessible when people started getting online. (And expanded quicker, which resulted in a lot of unwanted attention and drama, but that's neither here nor there...)

And so you know, "The powers that be" aren't going to touch Furry, because according to our constituton of rights, we have a right to exist.

'The powers that be' can also claim to do this and that when it comes to online anything, and there are always trivial ways to get around it. ;)  Information wants to be free and all that jazz, and whether it's TOR and encryption or point-to-point wireless links, there is always a way around any government's half-assed attempts at online censorship.  Even the Chinese not-so-half-assed attempts are just as trivially worked around (though more at your own risk of life and limb in meatspace).

All that said, I seriously doubt our government is willing to commit political suicide on something like this... then again, maybe they will, and get booted out anyway.  One can hope, right? ;P

hehe ya one could hope, still I think they have no choice but to try cause you can't get away from lies on the internet... the people will always find out... take away this abilty and we are less able to keep tabs on what is going on with them woof, good attack if pulled off right, let's see if it's possable to compleatly leash the internet... good luck is all I have to say to them *crosses his fingers that they don't do it*

That's a pretty good question, and I think I might have a bit of a clear answer to it. It might be a little hazy, but I think I can put two and two together and get some results here, so I'm gonna be doing a little chemistry. Stand back, this may cause an explosion or two! *boom* Oh crap, a test tube exploded...

One of the ways that the fandom had started may have had to do with the fact that there were cartoons quite a few decades ago, such as Looney Tunes and a few classic Disney movies that also had anthropomorphic animals in them. So there were those who were early fans of what we'd call "furries" today. Of course, back then in the 1960's, there was no internet, so the fandom was incredibly tiny, so they had, aside from telephones, pretty much no way to contact each other, and as such, fur conventions did not exist, until around 1989.

When the 1980's came around, the fandom had just grown to a very tiny population, and as 1989 came around, the first fur convention was spawned, as well as one of the final movies of the year, "UHF", starring Weird Al Yankovic, Kevin McCarthy, Michael Richards, David Bowe, Victoria Jackson and Fran Drescher. It was then that this convention was the first social gathering of like-minded individuals, like you and me, who are "fans of cartoon animals and have an interest in the field of anthropomorphics".

1998 became the big year when Anthrocon, one of the world's largest and most successful conventions today next to EuroFurence,  first came into fruition, first known as Albany AnthroCon, as it was once held in Albany, New York. It was later moved to the state of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, up until 2005, where it now stands today in Pittsburgh as of 2006, at the Westin/David L. Lawrence Convention Centre. As such, it became the main central hub for fur conventions everywhere. Other conventions we've seen have come and go, such as Conifur Northwest when the last one was held in 2005 (which was also my first fur con, too!).

I guess to make a very long story short, if there was no internet, my answer would be to revert ourselves back to the 1980's and 1990's, when things used to be advertised on newspapers, magazines, and the television set. The only use we'd have for all of our computers and laptops would be to use them as enormous fancy paperweights to hold our phone books and other newspapers with. Plus we'd see the downfall of every single website, and that includes, but not limited to, Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter.

So there's your answer, and a small bit of history of the fur fandom. :3

True, but who would want to live in the 1980s? 9though I did like the music :p... All kidden aside, wow not fun not having mass communacation for the fandom *unhappy face*
: Re: What if... There was no internet?
: Xen Garden February 19, 2010, 04:11:32 -07:00
The only reason I wish I was around in the 1980's was cuz that was the begining and uprising of rave history. But once 1990 hit, the raves have hit their peak, and 1991 and after... everything started to fall. And now you gotta search hard for a good one around the world. Lol.

Sorry for my nerd moment. *Smiles innocently*

Nu! INTARWEBZ! DON'T LEAVE ME!

I think alot of new furs wouldn't know what furry was or if they where one.

This is true, i didn't know what a furry was or that i was one till i heard about it on the web. Its not like i would have actively searched for this sorta thing, I kinda just stumbled upon it a few years ago...  Also i heard that they're predicting huge bandwidth restrictions, because they are actually running out of bandwidth, in certain areas, where the lines haven't been upgraded in a while, especially when the majority of China and India starts going online

Exactly. When I was in my teens, I delved into anthro, to escape the brutal reality that was school. That was in 1994. 11 years later, while looking for otter pics, I stumbled across the fandom.

So in the end there would still be people that are fur like but if there was no internet they will not know let alone gather with others of there kind... Ya, a sad day indeed *sad face* :(

I think any threats to the existence of the Internet are probably greatly exaggerated. It's more or less completely integrated into the fabric of... well... everything, and 1. there would be a huge vested interest in saving it and 2. the Internet is a distributed network anyway, so any attempts to "clamp down" on it are basically doomed to failure from the start. I'd be curious to see where the idea of it being "reset" comes from and would recommend healthy skepticism.

That said, I think the fandom would... dwindle, and further expansion would be very limited, but it would survive in the form of local groups and conventions.

I found out about furry through a local BBS, myself, back around the dawn of time, though without the Internet I doubt my interest would've gone much of anywhere.

I would be perfectly fine without any internet. Camp or relaxation would be right around the corner for me. But that is just speaking about me. I am sure businesses and hospitals and xbox live players will go insane.

Id be alright with out net, would not be the first time. How ever with out net furs could always call a friend, or actually go out and explore on their own LOL Me I'd call a friend before go out exploring :P Even tho, I have noticed this world has become more fur friendly, its not as much as a taboo it was back in the old days. Unless I am just lucky and know good understanding people.
