: What do you play?
: Vanilla Skunk November 14, 2009, 02:53:31 -07:00
Have an instrument?  Used to have an instrument?  Are you any good?  This is the place to talk about it.

I have an 5 string LTD B-55 Bass Guitar, and I'm about to get an amp for it soon, as well as the wiring and whatnot.

I used to play classical guitar when I was in middle school, so I just need to brush off my old talents, and get going with some new talents, geared for Bass.  (I've always had an obsession with Bass, and now I get to play. :P)

I also have a CB Drum Kit, with a bunch of add-ons that I've purchased myself, and some of the skins were replaced with Aquarian skins, because they were cheap, and the guy who owned them before was a high school student, making purchases on his allowance.  I figured it was a good place to start, after losing my drums to moving out of my hometown, and not being able to take them with me.  I can slowly upgrade from here.

I grew up learning Piano, and have my Grade 8 Royal Conservatory.  I can still play, but I'd rather not.  My parents tried to get forceful with my piano studies, and ruined it for me.  My origonal reason for wanting to play the piano, is because there was one in the house, and I wanted to play with it.  I later on moved to electronic keyboards, but got sick of the entire piano aspect, and gave my keyboard to my sister, so that I could forget about it.

Later on, I wanted to learn Guitar instead, because there was also one in the house, and I had a fascination with Heavy Metal, but wasn't really given a chance to, other than the crap they taught in middle school, which would've been a preschool version compared to actual guitar lessons.  I forgot to add, that my parents didn't want me to play in a metal band, so they refused to allow me to start guitar lessons.

I may be 28, and starting over, but you know what they say, better late than never.  At least I can still keep my rhythm on the drums. :3

Guitar here, for 20 years or so. I've currently got a busted-ass Strat copy (electronics are kind of borked, but it's got surprisingly good sustain for being a mid-range copy in 1988) and an ancient cheap acoustic; one of these days I really need to upgrade. I'm mostly a blues-rock guy with some alternative and folk leanings here and there.

Given the need, I can probably play trumpet again, as that was my thing in high school.

In (rough) order of proficiency, I play guitar, vocals, drums, bass guitar, and mandolin... I'm more or less equal at most of them, but my main instruments seem to be vocals and guitar. Started on mandolin and haven't played in awhile, but I remember most of what I learned. Dabbled in harmonica for awhile but never really pursued it... I can improvise quite decently on a piano in any kind of jam situation, but I don't know a thing about technically 'playing' one (the 'correct' way and all that, piano chords etc). I can play just about any percussion instrument I've picked up or sat behind-- I feel pretty comfortable playing instruments I've never played before, I love learning new things. :)

I'll post some pictures of my acoustic guitar soon, it's got quite the unique look to it, hehe. Cheap "Yamaki Deluxe Folk," probably some sort of knockoff but it's the best acoustic I've played/heard. Love it.

As for style, I'm pretty versatile. On acoustic guitar I just kind of pick out influences from whatever I hear and so I don't know if I could classify it well other than 'singer-songwriter.' I learned to play electric guitar when I was big into thrash metal way back so I can play that sorta stuff with ease, though I'm not too into it at this point. Still lots of metal influences in my playing, though (you can also check out my recently-discontinued industrial metal stuff here (http://www.swimfail.com)). Vocally I try to be as versatile as I can, not much more to say there. I consider myself pretty competent.

So, to sum up, I generally find myself writing and playing things on the acoustic these days... I don't have drums anymore, but if I did you can be sure I'd be playing them pretty regularly, I love drumming.

I just love music in general and jump at the chance to learn a new instrument or technique. It's all good to me :)

I stared off my music journey at a very young age, my very first piano lesson was with my mom when i was 2, she had me on her lap and told me that this note is a C. when i was 4 i took piano lessons at  Carilon music to learn classical repertoire and how to read music. and by 5 i could play Bach's Joy of mans desiring. my parents were happy that i could play so  they though i should take  up another instrument. my dad digested Guitar, so i took up the guitar.

it was my dad that taught me the basics of guitar from Major, Minor, Diminished chords and the Major scale patterns. after a year he signed me up for guitar lessons and  i  was the best in the class, i  could play  any chord the teacher asked as well as i read sheet music. i took classical guitar from  grade 8 onward to learn some classical guitar repertoire.i learned a lot of guitar during my high-school years but it wasn't challenging. so now that im taking classical guitar in university its overwhelming cause i was never taught to learn two pieces a month in  high-school, but its still fun. even though its extremely stressful and tiring :p

Classical guitar has took up most my time these days and i barely play  any piano now, witch is a shame id really like to take it back up and learn some  advance repertoire on the piano like i am dong on the guitar.

Gutiar  is my main instrument at the moments and Piano is my secondary.  but i also played the Violin. :3

I play the Clarinet. I played sax but never could get the breathing properly, never was able to sing that well as I can never quite tell what my voice is nor are my parents going to get me vocal lessons by now...but that does not stop me as I love to just sing out to all of what i listen to. I played for three years in school band then dropped it for Youth band which I have been in for 3 years now and will possibly do a 4th.

I was onley good at it in my imaginations lol i can play the first bit of white stripe 7 nation army on it thas about it xD
i wanna sell my guitar for an exchange of a drum set cause personally i think i make a better drummer than a guitarist.

I've taken a couple years of piano, but I've never been all that good at it.
Played clarinet for five or six years, but I haven't seriously practiced since high school. I was pretty advanced, though, so I'd like to get back into it sometime.

I play piano/synth, accordion and saxophone.
Does anyone think that owning 6 pianos is to many?
I've been playing 11 years or so.

Woo, fellow musicfolk!

I am saxophones and vocals, myself. My interest in music first started with church and hearing the different melodies play. One guy's voice, in particular, was amazing. Strong, and you could clearly hear either the tenor or bass melodies from him. Also, i have been around music my whole life with an accordian-playing grandma, and mom's love for listening to music. My first encounter with any sort of theory was in grade six, when i fell in love with my saxophone! I am an alto player, though looking to get a tenor (and bring my alto out from alberta q.q). In high school is when i joined choir halfway into grade 10. Was a tenor, but then switched to bass the next year. I am a baritone in chest voice, but i can hit very high (high guy c) and moderately low (g/f# in the bass clef, very bottom) when warmed up. Although i do not necessarily have the strongest tone when hitting the low-low notes, i was chosen as the bass section leader because i know how to hit the notes and sing out. The other basses could hit the notes with a better tone, making it all sound so chocolate-y rich... Mm! Anyway. I received very formal classical theory and vocal training when i went to my first year of post secondary. Made me realize more my love for folk music, along with giving me a level 2 conservatory theory level.

As for what i normally toddle around with in music, i love classical music (voice, though sometimes sax if there is a written part for it. Also, i also incorporate concert hall music, whether contemporary or actually operatic/classical in writing and style as classical for the general meaning of the music), jazz (sax/voc), broadway (jazz and voc), and folk (vocals, as sax hardly fits into here unless it is a bari sax... Bass line at times, y'know)!

But yes, i need to find someone with a piano that i can do some stuff with sometime, for sure ^^.

What else do other furz play?

Wow, a whole bunch of multi-instrumentalists!

I spent a good portion of high school in bands, with three years on the clarinet, and two on the tenor saxophone.  Was in both the jazz and concert bands until grade 11, and ended up dropping all of it in exchange for computer classes.  It's been so long that I can probably still play both, but I can't read sheet music for them any more.

I picked up a guitar near the end of high school and haven't put it down since.  It's been almost 10 years that I've been playing now, and all self taught.  I have two strat knock offs now, and an old electronic keyboard hanging around.

I also dabble in music software and working on electronica, but just as a hobby.  I don't have much spare time these days, so a scribbling few rifts and jamming along to some tracks I enjoy are mostly what I do.  Maybe one of these days I may sit still long enough to actually write a whole track, maybe.

In grade school I learned the alto sax, played it for 3 years. In high school I took up the guitar for about a month, now I just play the play button on Songbird to make music. D: I would like to re-try the guitar though, still have my learner electric around here somewhere..

I think I already posted, but I thought I'd add that I might be starting bass guitar in short order. I've always loved bass, just never jumped in with both feet before. Need to practice.

Mostly a vocalist, these days, if that counts. I haven't played with or performed for anyone in at least four years, but let's see...I play the trombone most proficiently, along with the rest of the lower-brass instruments. I make an adequate rhythm guitarist, but haven't bothered to take lessons or learn the instrument well enough to consider myself a guitarist. I can play a trumpet, clarinet, sax, or piano, but I wouldn't say I'm particularly great with any of them. Oh! and I did a year and half of bassoon (shout-out to Malicai!). It was a wonderful instrument, but, sadly, at the time I couldn't afford more than my own reeds to play on. :(

: Oly November 19, 2010, 01:10:47 -07:00
I play everything! If it makes sound I'm there.

I also make electronic music so I know all about programming synthesizers and mixing technique, that sort of thing.

I haven't played drums in a long time because I'm in an apartment and have nowhere to set them up.. so they're under my bed. >:

I own (but don't play dude to the fact that I need to replace the ac jack on the damn thing!) a Roland E-5 home synthesizer, a 5 string Robson electric guitar, a shitty little Aria ax-5 15 watt amp, a 5 string Nova acoustic guitar(Sears brand :p), and a Clarinet. However I can play pretty well any woodwind instrument with the exception of the flute.  I am also currently learning how to play the drums xD

a one meter tall accordion, it's a camillio IIIC. This beast has 4 regular voices and a master voice that combines them on the keys side, it also has 2 registries on the buttons side and a master that combines them. A little known fact about accordion playing: you cannot see the keys or buttons when you play... Well ok you can see the keys but you never look at them unless you start to play horribly wrong. The buttons however are impossible to see no matter how you contort to look.
I also can play piano and trumpet and French horn and tuba but fail at string instruments.

I currently have a Martin DXRAE1 Acoustic that I spend a few hours a day playing. Mostly I play stuff like folk, blues, really old southern rock and classical. Mostly I play finger style but that's just because I can never keep a pick for more that a few days without losing it. I do alot of singing, not to say I'm any good: some people say I sound like a drowned ostrich :b

I also have an Ibanez artcore bass that I haven't played in teo years (I sold my amp to pat for the guitar) and I used to have a Taye Jazz drumset, that I also had to get rid of.
oh, and somewhere around here I have a Bundy clarinet that I almost know how to play

Man multi-instrumentalism seems to be the order of the day. I've been playing electric bass and guitar for about 6 years, along with piano/keyboards on and off and I'd say I'm pretty good at all of them (...maybe not piano...). I'm a passable, but pretty basic, drummer. I've also been singing all that time and that's easily what I'm best at.

I'm such a huge fan of Prince that I've always really wanted to be a good "all-in-one" pop composer more than a maestro at any particular instrument (I have no hopes of being as good at each instrument as he is). I had a little band in high school and have been writing and recording songs the whole time...one of these days I'll put something online.

We should make a huge furry supergroup with every single person who posted in this thread. We can make a 90-minute concept album about Sonic falling in love with Tails or something. We'll make millions!
