: I have Mono... now what?
: Samurai Kai May 06, 2015, 07:55:00 -06:00
So today I just found out after my family doctor called that I have Mono and not Tonsillitis as I originally thought and was told. I was taking Amoxicillin since Saturday and did not see any improvements so on Tuesday I went back to the same walk in clinic and they just gave me the same thing except it was Amoxocillin with Clavulanic Acid. I had the roughest night in my entire life so this morning I got fed up and went to the hospital and they did some tests on me and sent me home, that was before I got the phone call from my real doctor. I'm going back out tonight to the hospital at 8PM and tomorrow at 9AM. So... what happens now? I just thought I'd like to warn people too, especially like, don't try anything and kiss me haha

i had mono for my first 4 weeks of university. it was really hard to keep up. i had gone to the clinic at ubc and 4 different doctors came in. 2 thought mon and the other 2 werent sure, lol. i was put on T3s and prednizone. it hurt so much to swallow anything. they told me not to bother giing to class because i would most likely just fall asleep, they were right although i tried for a few days first. anyways it took a long time to get over it. my sleep has been permanently screwed up ever since then. i was dating someone at the time and he still insisted on kissing and stuff, which was nice. he didnt get sick. i think someone has to have epstien-barr virus to be susceptable to it. i dont really know for sure and apparently neither did anyone else.

The throat pain is UNBEARABLE. I can't tell you how many times I've wailed over food and drink that I've tried to consume. I may just have to take the same medicine as you.

i didnt resort to liquids-only diet because that hurt just as much. the prednisone helped somewhat with the swelling/inflammation. but mostly i relied on the painkillers and being unconscious, lol. i dont think there is much else one can do. i hope yours goes quickly.

I had mono awhile ago, the first doctor I saw immediately booked me to get my tonsils out :/  My mom didn't trust his opinion though so we went to a hospital and got all the tests done for mono.  Best advice is just sit tight and get some ice-cream, it hurts at first but I found the cold really helped and least you're eating something.  Freezing those tubes of yogurt is pretty good too.  Its different for everyone but even after I was feeling good enough to start doing stuff again I was completely wiped out all the time so really just take it easy til you're feeling 100%.

Get well soon

Now... you sleep!

I had mono and in honesty, I found it an excellent chance to catch up on my rest. You are gonna sleep and sleep and sleep so you might as well enjoy it.

As for the pain, yup, thats a thing.

Hope you feel better soon!

With the scary list of potential side effects linked to Prednizone, it may be worth it to try Cepacol lozenges and Advil, hell even gallons of ice-cold Coke
(maybe look @ Coke Zero to avoid a diabetic coma  ??? )

When I have had a throat infection / inflammation in the past, I found that the cola burns for just a second, then is wonderfully numbing;
not sure if it is because of the carbonation or the acidity, yet it always seems to work for me (then again, I have Coke Zero Dependency Issues).

There is also something to be said for (quality) yogurt, insofar as it will be easier to consume, and the bacterial cultures it contains are always a good jump-start for the system after completing a round of antibiotics.

At any rate, stiff upper lip young ronin!

I'm feeling better enough to eat and drink stuff without feeling much pain :D just a really nasty throat infection that will have to clear up on its own. Bleh!

Thank you all so much for caring <3 it means a lot! Surprised to have gotten this many responses! I suppose this is what I get for being generous, sharing bubble tea on Furry Sushi Tuesdays with people who have or had already had it. :/

Yogurt has been a big help, I've been drinking those delicious Yop drinks and I've been drinking cranberry juice with ice (it's what the Samurai's been craving lately!) and I haven't eaten much real food but soon I will. :D

I've been able to eat and drink normally, the sore throat's gone. Infection is just barely there now. Only thing now is this really annoying itchy rash spreading all over my body like a wildfire! It looks pretty bad too. I'm not sure if this is the Mono by itself or if it's the Amoxicillin I took with it, because that too can apparently cause what would look like an allergic reaction.

I had mono in 2003, lost three months of work because of it, as well as 15 pounds. I slept 18 hours a day, had no energy, and could barely get water or jello down because of the intolerable throat pain. My doctor is a firm believer in the power of immune systems, so I received a very limited supply of T3s for the pain, and nothing for the infection. At the time, what bothered me the most was not knowing who gave me mono, because I had been traveling.

Oh man that sucks so bad. Looks like I'm not the only one who had such intolerable throat pain. Everyone seems to experience it differently from what I've read online, some people have it so mild and some people have had it as bad as you and me. The only thing I wish I could do was exercise and lift weights, but I may have to wait a long while like you did. Dang, and I was doing so well with training!

I've noticed that I wake up feeling really tired, it feels like heat exhaustion but minus the heat. I'll just have to wait it out without resisting, it has a way of kicking you in the butt if you try. I'm honestly not mad at the person who gave it to me honestly. I would've said otherwise during the extremely sore throat period, but I made it past that. Just gonna take some time... a long time.  :-3
